This month’s scam alert is from the Internal Revenue Service which renewed a consumer alert for
e-mail schemes after seeing an approximate 400 percent surge in phishing and malware incidents so far
this tax season.
The emails are designed to trick taxpayers into thinking these are official communications from the IRS or others in the tax
industry, including tax software companies. The phishing schemes can ask taxpayers about a wide range of topics.
E-mails can seek information related to refunds, filing status, confirming personal information, ordering transcripts and
verifying PIN information.
Variations of these scams can be seen via text messages, and the communications are being reported in every section of
the country. The IRS urges people NOT to click on these emails.
When people click on these email links, they are taken to sites designed to imitate an official -looking website, such as
IRS.gov. The sites ask for Social Security numbers and other personal information. The sites also may carry malware, which
can infect people's computers and allow criminals to access your files or track your keystrokes to gain information.
Much more information on e-mail and telephone tax scams are available on www.irs.gov then click on the latest scams.
We remind folks that if you have a personal experience by internet or telephone that others should know about,
please send a brief summary to our FOBE account: friends1673@comcast.net.
JOIN US AS WE RECOGNIZE OUR 2016 VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR!
DONNA BOWIE, our Thrift Shop Guru has been chosen as our Volunteer of the Year! Donna has given
over 740 hours of her time in 2015 making our Sea Captain’s Thrift Shop such a wonderful place to visit as well
as a huge success. Donna started working at the Thrift Shop under Roberta Wheeler and took over running the
shop, with the help of her many volunteers, over a year ago. Donna is also a Board member for the Friends of
Brewster Elders. Even though Donna and her husband, John, are actually Dennis residents, we are fortunate to
have her here in Brewster as our Thrift Shop “manager”. If you have not stopped by the shop recently, please do
so to see what a great job she has done. We will be publicly recognizing Donna at our Volunteer Luncheon in
June.
Congratulations & thank you to Donna for a job well done!
SPEAKING OF THE THRIFT SHOP…..be sure to stop in and see all the lovely merchandise they currently
have for spring and summer!!! Our friendly volunteers are there to serve you - Tuesday thru Saturday from
10:00am to 3:00pm. Donations of good quality, current spring or summer clothing, along with shoes, books,
jewelry, linens, etc. are always appreciated.
Also, the Thrift Shop is in “desperate” need of more volunteers willing to donate a few hours of their time to help
out in the shop. If you are interested or just have a question about what it entails, please call Barbara Mullane at
(508) 896-9662. Without our wonderful volunteers, we could not keep the shop going!!!
Sign up today and discover a great way to meet people!
Sea Captain’s Thrift Shop is located at 1671 Main Street, behind the COA building and the Fire station.
In Memoriam…
It is with regret that we announce the passing of Dorothy Fleischer this past February. Dot was a long-time
member of the Friends of Brewster Elders Board, as well as a Mah Jongg instructor for many years. Her
connection with the Brewster Council on Aging will always be remembered!

Betty Hart, R.N. will take blood pressures on Tuesday, April 19th from 9:00am - 10:00am

Can Peppermint oil help Irritable Bowel Syndrome?
Peppermint oil does appear to improve symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), at least in the short
term.
People who have IBS are familiar with abdominal pain and discomfort, bloating, excessive gas,
and bothersome bowel movements. Since there is not clear cause, finding relief is often an exercise in trial
and error. Treatment generally involves managing stress, avoiding trigger foods, getting enough exercise
and rest, and staying hydrated. Some medications may help, but they may also have side effects that can be
just as troubling as IBS symptoms.
Peppermint oil is a natural antispasmodic, which means it helps relax the smooth muscles of the intestines.
It’s long been a remedy for nausea, indigestion and other stomach problems.
Recently, investigators analyzed available research on peppermint oil as a treatment for IBS.
The investigators concluded that peppermint oil may indeed offer a safe and effective short term option for
some people with IBS.
In general, people who took peppermint oil had significantly better symptom relief than did those who took a
placebo pill.
However, peppermint oil can worsen heartburn. Manufacturers offer enteric-coated capsules to help prevent
this side effect.
Always consult your doctor before trying any new medications, either prescription or non -prescription.

Sightings from the Poop Deck
Jersey Boys...and Girls!!
On our drive south this year I happened to notice a North Carolina car bearing a license plate
that read “Pidge” and it immediately triggered a long ago high school memory regarding
nicknames. You see, even though most of the guys and girls had Christian names, they were not
used very often, and nicknames were often the preferred name of choice.
For example, our clique had a Howdy Doody, simply because he had freckles on his face and a
nose like Howdy Doody; a Monk, because of a bald spot on the back of his head; a Little
Immigrant who really looked like he just passed the Statue of Liberty on a steamship bound for
Ellis Island. There was a Scarecrow, a Pigeon, a Chief Pontiac, a Skinny Brown, a Knife, a Mr.
Peepers, a Batman, Farley Granger, Toad, Porky Pig, Rock, Chick, Smokey, Pepsi, Flappy (Big
ears!), Sonny Boy, Sally Sausage, Lefty and the list goes on.
The girls didn’t escape either, but girls are a little more sensitive than guys so we had to be
careful not to scar any of them for life. There was Mary, aka, Ten-to-Two because when she
walked her left foot always stepped toward the ten on the clock and her right foot always
pointed to two. Mary sat next to me at our last reunion….if she only knew. Then there was
Louisa, pretty girl, but all her beauty dissipated because she was forever known as Sweet Louisa
With The Hairy Legs; Rosalie Knows The Way, because she always got us lost with her
directions. Biancalina was someone near and dear to me. Biancalina was actually homemade
bleach sold out of the trunk of a car by a little Italian known as the “Biancalina Man” for twenty-
five cents a gallon, but you had to always provide the glass gallon container from the previous
sale, sort of like the forerunner of a deposit. Biancalina was used to not only wash whites, but to
bleach high school girl's hair as well. I don’t know how true this was, but hold on while I ask
Biancalina herself. Yup, it’s true!
Yes, by today’s standards it may appear that we were sometimes cruel in high school, but
nicknames were never meant to be hurtful, only humorous, and we all had one. I suppose it may
even be considered a form of bullying today, but this was way back in the fifties and including
poor Louisa, who never found out, some nicknames were quite fitting... and funny!
