The Dog Days of Summer have Arrived! It’s HOT outside! How about a refreshing dip in the Bay, or a cool freshwater pond? Did you know that the COA has 2 Beach Wheelchairs available, one of which can actually go right into the water? We loan them out for 2 days at a time and we ask for a donation of $10.00. They can be used at any of the Brewster beaches (either Bay or Pond beaches), and must stay within town lines. For more information, and/or to reserve one, please call the COA at: (508) 896-2737. A BIG THANK YOU to the ANGLICAN CHURCH MEMBERS For their continuous support by donating toilet paper, paper towels and personal care items for us to distribute to our needy seniors! It is much appreciated!! WE’VE MOVED...TEMPORARILY. For the month of August, the Brewster Council on Aging has moved its offices to the Brewster Water Department at 165 Commerce Drive (off Freemans Way). Even though we’re not hosting programs, we are still continuing to book for appointments taking place in September. We can still be reached by phone at our regular number: (508) 896-2737 Additionally, our transportation service will still be operating during August. Our SHINE appointments are available throughout August, and will be held at the Water Department. And, we still have our beach wheelchairs and medical equipment available for loan! Just give us a call at (508) 896-2737 if you wish to make an appointment, schedule transportation, or borrow any equipment. Please be sure to leave a message if you are unable to contact us directly, and we will definitely get back to you! Page 2 August 2017 Brewster, MA SEA CAPTAIN’S THRIFT SHOP NEWS 66 Harwich Road (Route 124) It’s hot outside! Why not take a break from the heat and do a little shopping at our lovely, air-conditioned thrift shop? We’re completely stocked with summer necessities; from beach bags and hats, to swimwear, to shorts and breezy tops! We’re easy to find, and have plenty of parking—- both out front and around the back! We’re open Monday thru Saturday, from 10:00am to 3:00pm. We’re also taking donations of Fall items, so if you’ve got some gently used autumn sweaters, dresses, etc., please feel free to bring them to our shop. As always, please do not leave donations outside. We look forward to seeing you soon! Always Changing Gail Sheehy, who wrote a number of self-help books that assist women in navigating the many changes life throws at them, said, “Changes are not predictable; but to deny them is to be an accomplice to one’s own unnecessary vegetation.” I don’t like change, yet many times it is unpreventable. We just get into a nice routine and something happens and everything changes. It’s the human condition that we will live through unavoidable gains and losses all through our lives. Many changes are totally out of our control. We cannot stop aging or the infirmities that it brings. We fight against giving up driving but at some point it has to happen. We can just live a healthy lifestyle and accept what comes our way. Some changes are more predictable than others; such as, another autumn and winter are coming whether I like it or not. My remedy for being concerned about the cold weather I dislike peeking over the seasonal horizon is to go to the ocean and soak up the sun and atmosphere. But it is important that while there we focus on what we are feeling, the heat of the sun, the sound of the waves, the call of the seagulls. If we sit quietly with our eyes closed and focus on absorbing our surroundings, in the winter when we feel like we will never be warm again, we can sit with our eyes closed and remember the beach and how we felt with the sun on us and the sound of the waves coming and going. We don’t have the power to stop change, but if we focus our spirit on things when they are the way we want them to be, we can record the sights, sounds and impressions within our spirit to give us strength when the inevitable comes. Eating Health-tips: Slow down, eat less Research shows that eating at a slower pace can reduce the calories consumed in a meal. It may also increase your satisfaction with the food you consume. Slow down your eating by: ■ Having respect for the meal: Find a place to sit without distractions such as a television, radio or reading material. Take a moment to calm yourself and notice the food you are about to eat. ■ Pre-dishing food: Dish up a modest portion of food away from the dinner table and leave serving plates and bowls off the dinner table. This makes it harder to reach for seconds and provides a built-in pause to ask yourself if you’re truly hungry. ■ Taking little bites and breaks: Keep the amount of food on your spoon or fork modest. After a couple of bites, put your utensil down or pause to take a sip of water or pat your lips with a napkin before resuming with additional bites or servings. ■ Eating crunchy: Crunchy or chewy food items such as raw vegetables, nuts, some fruits and hearty, whole-grain breads take an above-average amount of chewing before swallowing. ■ Taking time to savor: Appreciate the tastes and textures of food as you eat. Let savory aftertastes linger and play out before taking your next bite. ■ Using gadgets: A number of smartphone apps and other gadgets may help you slow the pace of your eating. Even short-term use of a timer can give you enough insight into your habits to make a change. Happy and Healthy Summer Days! Will Rogers It may come as no surprise, but it appears that I find myself standing in the middle of a room staring out into space and trying to figure out why I came into the room and what I was looking for in the first place. Seems to be happening more often than not these days. Reminds me of that old story of the three sisters living together, 92, 94 and 95 years old. The oldest went upstairs one evening to take a bath. As she was getting in the tub with one foot in and one foot out, she called down to her sisters, "Am I getting in the tub or am I getting out of the tub?" The 94 year old decided to go upstairs to see if she could help figure out the situation. She got to the 3rd step and stopped - then called out, "Was I going up the stairs or was I coming down the stairs?” The 92 yr. old, sitting at the kitchen table, thought she better knock on wood and as she knocked on the kitchen table she said, "I hope I never get as bad as my sisters. Now was that the front door or the back door?" A friend on Long Island recently shared a story with me which sort of piggy-backed on the three sisters. He referred to it as Age-Activated Attention Deficit Disorder, or A.A.A.D.D. and how it manifests itself: “I decide to water my garden. As I turn on my hose in the driveway, I look over at my car and decide it needs washing. As I start toward the garage I notice mail on the porch table that I brought up from the mailbox earlier. I decide to go through the mail before I wash the car. I lay my car keys on the table, put the junk mail in the trash can under the table, and notice that the can is full, so I decide to put the bills back on the table and take out the trash first. But then I think, since I’m going to be near the mailbox when I take out the trash I may as well pay the bills first. I take my checkbook off the table and see that there is only one check left. My extra checks are in the desk in the study, so I go inside to my desk where I find a can of Diet Coke I’d been drinking. I’m going to look for my checks, but first I need to push the Diet Coke aside so I don’t accidentally knock it over. The Diet Coke is getting warm so I decide to put it into the refrigerator to keep it cold. As I head toward the kitchen with the Diet Coke, a vase of flowers on the counter catches my eye - it needs to be watered. I put the Diet Coke on the counter and discover my reading glasses which I have been searching for all morning. I decide that I had better put them back on my desk, but first I’m going to water the flowers. I set the glasses back down on the counter, fill a container with water and suddenly spot the TV remote which someone left on the kitchen table. I realize that tonight when we go to watch TV I’ll be looking for the remote, but won’t remember that it’s on the kitchen table, so I decide to put it back in the den where it belongs, but first I’ll water the flowers. I pour some water into the flowers, but quite a bit spills on the floor, so I set the remote back on the table and get some towels and wipe up the spill. Then I head down the hall trying to remember what I was planning to do. At the end of the day the car isn’t washed, the bills aren’t paid, there’s a warm can of Diet Coke sitting on the counter, the flowers don’t have enough water, there is still only one check in my checkbook, I can’t find the remote or my glasses and I don’t remember what I did with my car keys. Then when I try to figure out why nothing got done today, I’m really baffled because I know I was busy all day and I’m really tired! I realize this is a serious problem and I will try to get some help for it…...but first I’ll check my email.” Sound familiar? Peter R.
