Photo courtesy of Denise Rego, COA Director Page 2 August 2016 Brewster, MA This month’s article is from the FBI alerting us that about the “TECH SUPPORT SCAM”. They have seen an increase in complaints related to technical support scams, where the caller claims to be an employee of a major computer or security company, further claiming to be support for cable and Internet companies and offers assistance with digital cable boxes and connections, modems, and routers. The subject claims the company has received notifications of errors, viruses, or security issues from the victim's internet connection. Victims report the subjects have strong foreign accents. Sometimes these scammers make contact through an on-screen pop-up message claiming viruses are attacking the device. The message includes a phone number to call to receive assistance. Once the phony tech support company/representative makes verbal contact with the victim, the subject tries to convince the victim to provide remote access to their device. If the device is mobile (a tablet, smart phone, etc.), the subject often instructs the victim to connect the device to a computer to be fixed. Once the subject is remotely connected to the device, they claim to have found multiple viruses, malware, and/or scareware that can be removed for a fee. Fees are collected via a personal debit or credit card, electronic check, wire transfer, or prepaid card. Be aware that no major computer manufacturer or security company works this way. Hang up, or if it’s a pop-up message simply do not open it; it will timeout and disappear. If you have had a problem that others should know about, please send a brief summary to our FOBE account: friends1673@comcast.net We look forward to receiving your personal experiences and spreading the word through this column! Have you visited our new Sea Captain’s Thrift Shop location at 66 Harwich Road (Route 124)? If not, stop by and see us….we love showing off our new “digs”. You’re invited to join them! 10 WARNING SIGNS That Seniors May Be Unsafe on the Road It’s important to collect the facts before making any recommendations about whether an older adult should continue driving. Here are signs that further investigation could be needed: 1. Those Mysterious Dents - If an older adult can’t seem to explain that dent or you notice multiple instances of damage, further investigation may be needed. 2. Trouble Turning to See When Backing Up - The issues of aging could compromise mobility and, in turn, certain important movements needed to drive safely, like looking over the shoulder. 3. Confusing the Gas and Brake Pedals - If a senior is getting confused about how his/her vehicle operates, it could be time to give up the car keys. 4. Increased Irritation and Agitation When Driving - Poor health or chronic pain from conditions such as arthritis can trigger increased agitation. 5. Bad Calls on Left-hand Turns - Turning left can be tricky and dangerous for older adults who may have experienced a decline in cognitive abilities. 6. Parking Gone Awry - Difficulty parking, including parallel parking, could cause damage to an older adult’s vehicle as well as those vehicles around it. 7. Difficulty Staying Within the Lanes - It could be a sign that fatigue or vision problems are making it difficult to stay the course. 8. Delayed Reaction and Response Time - Safe driving depends on quick reaction times. Issues of aging can slow those response times. 9. Driving the Wrong Speed - Driving too fast or too slowly are indicators that a driver’s judgement may be impaired. 10. Riding the Brake - Riding the brake could be a sign that a driver no longer has confidence in his or her skills. Your input helps me when I am looking to book programs. REMEMBER…..Here at the COA, we offer the following by appointment – just call us at (508) 896-2737 to sign up. Some of these are on “hiatus” until September but we can set up your appointment now! HEARING SCREENINGS BANKING ASSISTANCE MASSAGE LEGAL ASSISTANCE FINANCIAL PLANNING PEDICARE COMPUTER HELP SHINE COUNSELING OUTREACH MORE SAFE DRIVING TIPS… Laws concerning Emergency Vehicles – especially now that we have sidewalks in town and the “soft shoulder” is limited in areas. If an emergency vehicle using sirens or flashing lights is coming in either direction, you MUST pull off as close to the right side of the road as possible without going up onto the sidewalk. If you see an area a “little further” ahead where you can pull off, use that area – DO NOT PROLONG PULLING OVER TO FIND A BETTER SPOT – just do the best you can and stop. You must come to a complete stop until the vehicle passes – rolling slowly is not acceptable. Never stop in the middle of an intersection – drive through and pull over as soon as it is safe. Just a reminder – it is illegal to follow closer than 300 feet behind an emergency vehicle. Move-over Law – when approaching a stationary emergency vehicle (this includes fire, police, ambulances, as well as highway maintenance vehicles or tow trucks as long as lights are flashing) reduce speed to one that is reasonable and safe for road conditions. On a highway with at least 2 lanes in the same direction you are heading, yield these vehicles the “right-of-way” by moving to a lane not next to the one occupied by the emergency vehicle. In other words, leave an open lane between you and the emergency vehicle. If this is not possible, you must use caution and reduce speed, to one that is reasonable and safe so you can be ready to stop if necessary. PUBLIC HEALTH and WELLNESS NURSE OF VNA CAPE COD Dee will do home visits on Mondays. The monthly blood pressure monitoring program at the COA has been discontinued. Summer Health Tips - Minimizing Mosquito Madness To mosquito-proof your summer, ban the insects from your backyard and protect yourself from their bites. In the US, many types of mosquitoes are most active at sunrise, sunset and early evening. ▪ Eliminate their breeding ground – standing water, change water in landscape features such as birdbaths and fountains – at least weekly. Store buckets and pots upside down. Replace outdoor lights with yellow “bug” lights which may be less attractive to mosquitoes than regular lights. ▪ Use mosquito repellents that use DEET, icaridin (also called picaridin), oil of lemon, eucalyptus or IR3535. Don’t appl y repellant under clothing or to rashes, cuts or sunburns, and avoid your mouth or eyes. ▪ Wear long sleeves and pants. ▪ If you are using sunscreen, apply it before insect repellant. Repellants can lessen the effect of sunscreen, so use a sunscreen with a higher SPF. ▪ If you go somewhere with a lot of mosquitoes, consider wearing a head net. If you’re camping, keep tents zipped and repair tears. In lodgings open to the outdoors, use netting over your bed. Enjoy your summer! August 2016 Page 11 Brewster, MA Sightings from the Poop Deck Discourse Marker So I really don’t remember when it began for me, but the use of the word “so” as a sentence starter has me hooked. So I really have to control my reaction whenever I’m listening to someone deliver an answer to a question, or make a statement. When I hear it spoken by someone at the beginning of the sentence, I immediately lose my concentration and forget what the speaker has been talking about. The word “so” has been defined as a “Discourse Marker”, and please do not ask me how I came about writing about it this month. Perhaps I hear it so much now that sirens seem to go off whenever I pick up on it. Mark Zuckerberg apparently uses it all the time and since the co-creator of Facebook is now worth $51.2 billion if it’s good enough for Zuck, then it’s good enough for me. “So Facebook is not one thing.” “So what we want to do is build a pipeline of experiences for people to have.” So when did this phenomena begin? Some say it replaced “um” or “like.” I seem to remember “clearly”, “really”, “actually”, etc. Fast Company, a monthly American business magazine published an article by Hunter Thurman in 2014 titled “How A Popular Two-Letter Word Is Undermining Your Credibility” and business types need to drop the “so” for three main reasons: 1. “So” insults your audience. 2. “So” undermines your credibility. 3. “So” demonstrates that you are not 100% comfortable with what you are saying. So, the next time you are in an audience listening to a speaker who is continually beginning his sentences with the word “so”, ask yourself if you have been insulted; if the speaker’s credibility has been undermined; or if he/she is uncomfortable with the topic. So, on occasion I have to chuckle when I find myself beginning my sentences with “so.” Hopefully no one notices as I bite my tongue and it begins to bleed. Now that you have read this you will, no doubt, become acutely aware whenever you hear someone begin their sentences with “so”. So what’s the point of all this? So there is none! Peter R. Scheffer - (“So Life is Still Good!”) - So, So, Sew Your Britches!! P.S. Discourse Marker - a word or phrase that is used to indicate that one stage or topic in a conversation has finished and a new one is beginning. poop deck, n., a deck above a ship’s main afterdeck BHT - BOSTON HOSPITAL TRANSPORTATION Enjoy comfortable and safe transportation from Cape Cod DIRECT to Boston hospitals on a wheelchair accessible van.
