“HOME SWEET HOME”
After exploring many
options to house our
staff and programs,
it has been decided that
we will be staying
right here at
1673 Main Street!
Construction is due to begin on December 1st
but currently, we do not have specific information
regarding the demolition of the 2 buildings in our
backyard, moving of the gasoline pumps, and
installation of the new septic system.
But don’t worry, we will do our best to keep
everyone informed of any changes
to the schedule!
Page 2 December 2016 Brewster, MA

DO YOU THINK IT’S GOING TO SNOW
THIS WINTER?
TAKE CONTROL of your life
and secure a person to snow-plow
your driveway now!
The COA gets numerous calls asking us
to recommend someone, but legally we are not allowed
to do that. Therefore, call your carpenter, landscaper,
ask your neighbor who they use, or maybe they are
willing to help do the job for you at an agreed upon
price. Planning ahead will secure your comfort and
safety in your own home, which will make for a
happier winter season!
DID YOU KNOW…?
We now RECYCLE
button batteries, such as the ones
we use in our watches and hearing
aids. And, we accept
used or no longer wanted/needed
eyeglasses thru the Lion’s Club
to help those in need. We also accept
old cellphones through a program
which allows us to swap them out to
become 911-specific emergency
phones to give to our seniors.
In addition, we will take
Campbell’s Soup and Box Tops
coupons that help get
supplies for our elementary
school children. If you have any
of the above, please drop them off at the COA
office the next time you come in!
Thank you for your help!

“SENIORS HELPING SENIORS” PROGRAM CONTINUES
With the holiday season approaching, we are again asking that you think of those less fortunate than yourselves
when you are shopping.
“Seniors Helping Seniors” is an on-going program. When you are grocery shopping, and if you are purchasing cat
or dog food or supplies, please add an extra bag or a few cans to your cart. Some seniors find it hard to take care of
their pets on their limited income.
Also products like body wash, shampoo, detergent, toothpaste/toothbrushes, dental floss, soap, cleaning products,
and body powder are some of the items also needed. Most of these items are considered “a luxury” and cannot be
purchased with food stamps or other forms of assistance. Just drop off your donations to FOBE in the COA office
and we will see that those in need are able to avail themselves of them during this holiday season and beyond.
Thank you for your generosity to your fellow Brewster seniors!!
C.O.A. HOLIDAY HAPPENINGS!!

direction of Mr. Tom Faris. These talented young people awe us each year with their musical abilities. We are so
fortunate to be able to get on their very busy schedule every year so don’t miss hearing them perform.
Call to reserve your seat (508) 896-2737 today. Refreshments will be served. What a lovely way to spend an
afternoon during the holiday season! Due to limited parking at Maplewood we will be shuttling people to the
event from a central location. We will call people with time and location the week prior to the concert.

SHINE NEWS
Medicare Part D and Pharmacies
For many Medicare drug plans, the pharmacy you use could make a
big difference in the cost of your medications!
All Medicare drug plans and Medicare Advantage plans (HMOs, PPOs) have
network pharmacies. Most pharmacies accept most plans. However, if you go to a
pharmacy that is not in your plan’s network, your medications will not be covered, and you
will pay full retail price.
For 2017, 85% of the Medicare drug plans have preferred pharmacies. By using a
preferred pharmacy, you can save money! Some plans have changed their preferred
pharmacies for 2017 so please check to make sure the pharmacy you currently use will still
be the best come January 1st.
Most plans have a mail-order program that allows you to get a 90-day supply of your
covered prescription drugs sent directly to your home. Mail order sometimes costs less, but
using preferred pharmacies could end up costing you less than mail order.
MEDICARE OPEN ENROLLMENT ENDS DECEMBER 7!

STAYING HAPPY DURING THE HOLIDAYS
The holiday season is supposed to be a season of happiness and joy, but for many of
us, especially seniors, feelings of sadness, loneliness and isolation are prevalent. Many
seniors are widowed, have lost close friends and family, or are separated from family and friends, in
addition to poor health. Holidays, unfortunately for many, can intensify these feelings of sadness.
We can all use some help to lessen those feelings of sadness. Here are some tips to help you
overcome those feelings.
Don’t isolate yourself. If you can’t be with family, invite some friends to share the holidays.
Volunteer your time. Many churches and civic groups would be glad to have your help, and helping
others is a great way to help manage your own troubles. If you are homebound, ask about community
offerings in your area for socialization during the holidays.
Try to avoid alcohol, and an excess of sugar and carbohydrates. Alcohol can intensify negative
feelings, and overindulgence in sweets and carbohydrates can lead to a moody state afterwards.
And of course, remember to adhere to your regular schedule of medications, during this busy time.
Watch your finances. Most seniors are on a fixed income. Set a budget for gift fibbing and stick to it.
Your grandchildren and others will remember the time they spent with you, not those gifts.
Overspending will cause you to worry over bills after the holidays are over.
Don’t deny or try to hide your feelings of sadness. Very often, just being able to share your feelings
with someone will help. Also, do try and avoid confrontations, use this time to enjoy your
family and friends; this is not the time to relive past hurts and disappointments.
