Page 2 February 2016 Brewster, MA We are replacing this month’s “Frauds & Scams” article with a timely announcement from “Friends of Brewster Elders”…. The “Friends of Brewster Elders” is pleased to announce the formation of a small “Personal Pantry” here at the Brewster Council on Aging. This pantry will contain toiletries and personal hygiene products along with some pet food. This pantry is intended to supplement other programs that distribute food and household goods, but not personal hygiene/toiletry items. Hopefully this pantry will assist those whose finances put them in a situation of having to make a choice – do I feed my cat or dog or do I purchase supplies to take proper care of myself? This is not a choice we want our seniors to have to make. While supplies are presently a bit limited, as need is established, the program will expand. As always we gratefully accept donations to this pantry and are extremely appreciative of any and all. If you need to have access to this pantry, please contact the Outreach Office at (508) 896 -2737, Ext. 4226. PLEASE NOTE CHANGE OF VENUE FOR ST. PATRICK’S DAY LUNCHEON…. NEW TREATMENT FOR PARKINSON’S DISEASE – Mayo Clinic Health Letter 12/15 Scientists have developed a new treatment for advanced Parkinson’s disease that may work better than current oral drug therapies and may be on par with – but less invasive than deep brain stimulation. Currently, a combination of Levodopa and Carbidopa (Sinemet) is one of the most effective drugs available for treating symptoms of Parkinson’s disease. Traditionally given orally as a tab- let, this combination medication helps relieve resting tremor, muscle stiffness, and slowness of movement, making the disease much easier to manage. Levodopa crosses the blood brain barrier and is the active drug, while carbidopa prevents levodopa from breaking down before it reaches the blood brain barrier. But there is a downside. People who’ve taken Levodopa for a long time often experience “off” times--- periods when the drug does not work as well as it should due to variations in how the body responds to the drugs. To address this problem, scientists figured they could find a way to provide continuous delivery of the medication. They developed a gel (Duopa) that infused directly into the upper part of the small intestine. The gel, which is a combination of Levodopa and Carbidopa, is delivered through a tube inserted into a small hole in the abdomen. This tube is attached to a portable infusion pump. The Food and Drug Administration has recently approved Duopa for Parkinson’s disease. Physi- cians are just beginning to familiarize themselves with the treatment but feel it is a major shift in the way Levodopa may be administered and shows great potential as an alternative to deep brain stimulation in many cases. What a good way to find that interesting article from a previous month without having to sift through lots of paper. Happy reading! February 2016 Page 11 Brewster, MA Sightings from the Poop Deck “I knew Fred Astaire; Fred Astaire was my friend; You're no Fred Astaire!” Huddle-up you guys over fifty, I've got some advice for you. Ladies, you too can read along, since this advice can be applied to you as well. This past New Year's Eve Joanie Carfora and I attended a wedding for the daughter of one of our nephews in New Jersey. Obviously all of you have attended recent weddings and are well aware that wedding receptions of today do not look anything like the wedding receptions of yesteryear, and nothing like our own wedding reception. We had fewer bridesmaids and ushers, while today's wedding party requires a bus to get the bridal party to the church. Receptions today are often held in very elaborate country clubs, which usually requires parents of the bride to invest an amount equivalent of another college education, which, by the way, they just recently managed to pay off. And now that I have set the stage, I am at the point where I am about to dole out some very important advice, so guys, focus and pay particular attention here. The "Music!" You probably had a live band with a female vocalist, and that band would review with you beforehand, your wedding song and the music you preferred; foxtrot, waltz, maybe even a jitterbug for your parents, played in a way where you could have a pleasant conversation with your table neighbor. Today, we have DJs and aside from the couple's wedding song, which you have probably never heard before, will play heavy metal at a decibel level which can make the deaf hear, the blind see, cause irregularity and make us wish we were more adept at lip reading and signing. So you sit there and move your lips and utilize your best sign language as you watch the Millennials twist and turn to the "music." Now here's the important lesson for you: "Do not go out on to the dance floor if you are over fifty and try to imitate these kids - no matter what!" Even if the bride comes over and begs you to dance with her, do not go out there! Very politely explain that your plantar fasciitis is acting up and you are in excruciating pain. Better yet, tell her you have to go and change your diaper. You see, if she convinces you with “no one will be looking at you” and you can't say no and try to imitate those movements of the younger, we at the table will all have our eyes on you as you move in a herky-jerky manner, twisting like a gull with a broken wing. Trust me, you will look like a freshly hooked fish flopping around the deck of a charter boat, and while no one cares about the younger people's antics, all eyes will be on you. Ladies, take heed because this applies to you as well. We're not looking at your beautiful new dress, or your stunning coiffure, but wondering about "moves" we've never seen before. Think the "Elaine Dance - Kicks & Thumbs" on Seinfeld - check it out: ( http://bit.ly/1vJMcGM ) Our drive back to Cape Cod on New Year's Day was dreamingly quiet and appreciated. Our sense of hearing was slowly returning to normal. We were in rehab and it was glorious. Peter R.
