Page 2 February 2017 Brewster, MA This month’s Frauds & Scams article comes to us from the Massachusetts Executive Office of Elder Affairs, courtesy of Pamela Woodbury, MCOA Certified Director of the Spencer Council on Aging/Senior Center. Pam writes: “I have a couple of seniors getting calls telling them Medicare is going to change and asking for (their) Social Security number and Date of Birth. The calls came in the evening after offices would be closed. Thank goodness the seniors didn't fall for it but I am concerned that...these scams are going to increase.” According to the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services website, https://www.stopmedicarefraud.gov : “Protecting your personal information is the best line of defense in the fight against health care fraud and abuse. Medicare and Medicaid lose billions of dollars each year to scam artists. You can make a difference.” They go on to suggest the following: 1. Don’t give your Medicare, Medicaid or Social Security number to strangers. 2. Beware of anyone who calls (or visits) you and says they represent Medicare or the federal government. 3. Remember that Medicare does not call (or visit) to sell you anything. To report suspected Medicare fraud, please contact the Office of the Inspector General at: (800) 447-8477 If you have had a problem that others should know about, please send a brief summary to our FOBE account : friends1673@comcast.net. We look forward to sharing your experiences in the hopes of helping others. Thank you! SEA CAPTAIN’S THRIFT SHOP NEWS Happy Valentine’s Day to all of you! Would you like to get out of the house and meet some new people? The Brewster Men’s Coffee Club will be meeting on the following Thursday afternoons in February at the Brewster COA: 2, 9, 16, 23 We are always looking for new members, as well as Guest Speakers. Come enjoy a hot cup of coffee and some great conversation! What a great way to spend a chilly February afternoon! JUST A REMINDER… If you are in need of a medical ride to the doctors, etc., please be sure to contact us AS SOON AS YOU MAKE YOUR APPOINTMENT. During the winter months, many of our volunteer drivers become “snow birds”, heading south to warmer climates, so we are limited in the number of rides we can do. The earlier you can call us, the more time it gives us to locate a driver. We ask for a minimum of 4 BUSINESS DAYS (weekends and holidays do not count as we are not open), but are always happiest when you give us a longer time period to enlist a driver. Also, with snow-season already well underway, we want to remind you to be wary of icy walkways as well as roadways. If you get services from Visiting Nurses, Elder Services, Meals on Wheels, or are using our Medical Ride program, those individuals really need to have safe access to your home. Make arrangements to have your driveway plowed before a snow storm hits, and make sure any walkways are cleared before any volunteer driver comes to pick you up. We want everyone to stay safe this winter! Thank you for your understanding. INCOME TAX PREPARATION Brewster Town Hall 2198 Main Street It’s income tax season! Make it easy on yourself and call the Brewster COA soon at (508) 896-2737 to schedule an appointment with a knowledgeable tax representative from AARP. Please fill out a form with your suggestions and drop it in the box. There are orange forms right at the Suggestion Box for you to use. Boost your “good” Cholesterol - Mayo Clinic, Nov. 2016 High-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol is called the “good” or “happy” cholesterol because its components work to remove excess cholesterol from your blood and protect your blood vessels from damage and inflammation. A higher level of HDL is associated with a lower risk of heart disease and related complications, such as a heart attack. The best way to boost your HDL cholesterol is to: ♥Lose weight - Shedding extra pounds can lead to a 5 to 20 % increase in HDL. ♥Get moving - Physical activity, especially aerobic activity, not only helps you lose weight but also can help improve your HDL function and raise HDL. Brisk walking, jogging, swimming and playing racquetball are all good signs of aerobic activity, as long as you safely get your heart rate up. ♥Not smoking - If you smoke, stopping can increase your HDL by up to 5%. Quitting isn’t easy, but once you do, tobacco’s harmful effects on HDL tend to evaporate. ♥Drink in moderation - Moderate alcohol consumption increases HDL cholesterol. This might explain why a drink a day may have protective effects on the heart. But don’t start drinking to protect your heart. Exercise and a healthy diet can be safer and just as effective! February is American Heart Month! What better way to show your heart some love than to try one or more of the suggestions above! February 2017 Page 11 Sightings from the Poop Deck A Royal Flush It’s New Year’s Eve 2016 as I write this and I am once again amazed at how quickly the years pass as I grow older. When I was a kid in elementary school, each month from September to June was an eternity and it seemed like summer recess would never come. These days it seems like I am always paying estimated taxes, renewing my automobile registration, having my septic pumped, playing with TurboTax, or going for my annual physical. 2016 did not end on what I would describe as a high note. My six month dental checkup did not go well and my dermatologist was not forthcoming with any good news either. Our washer backed up in the basement and having the system pumped did not resolve the problem. Our plumber suggested we dig up the entire pipe to the main tank and replace it. We poo pooed that idea (no pun intended) and replaced the plumber instead, called in a company to clear the blockage and in five minutes we were back in business. Hallelujah! There is nothing in this whole wide world that will bring a wider smile to your face than the resumption of a good clean flush on the eve of Christmas eve. You might even say we are now “sitting pretty!” (Ooooo sorry) On the brighter side, Joanie Carfora and I both celebrated milestone birthdays (39) which brought all the kids, grandkids and our only great granddaughter (to date) home to celebrate the occasion. It was fun, but as always, too short a visit. I did, however, introduce our great granddaughter to snow, snow tubing and even managed to build a snowman, something she will never see in Panama. Needless to say, she wasn’t impressed, but my body paid the price. My knees are still barking. Perhaps the two new great grand kids, both due in February 2017, will be more appreciative and show a little more enthusiasm. We are looking forward to this New Year of 2017. I’m seriously considering a resolution where I fire all my doctors, dentists, dermatologists and one plumber, and replace them with good prescriptions like cabernet sauvignon and Sam Adams. Now there is a resolution that I will be able to keep. Peter R. Scheffer (“Life is Good!”) - “Aim High!!” P.S.
