The staff of the Council on Aging is always available to link our seniors to our services and give support . Happy New Year to All! It’s hard to believe that 2016 is behind us and we are moving forward into 2017. Time goes by so fast that we all need to enjoy every day. We hope that you will continue to include us as part of your family, as we love our relationships with you. As you might remember, our collaboration with UMass Boston-Gerontology to survey our Brewster citizens has produced a 113-page Needs Assessment Study Report and now it is time to start forming a plan to implement these needs. The report highlighted some of the things that we do best, along with others that need improvement. Sometimes change can be difficult, but new challenges help us grow and enhance our lives. The 3 most important things needed for a successful life are nutrition, exercise and socialization. Going forward, we will focus on this and work hard to provide quality programs and events for all. A new year can offer new opportunities and growth, so I’d like to reach out to you for your ideas and interests. Please feel free to stop in anytime to discuss your thoughts with me. Denise HOLIDAY CLOSING NOTES The COA will be closed on Monday, January 2 for the New Year’s Day observance. We will also be closed on Monday, January 16 in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. BREWSTER COA’S INCLEMENT WEATHER POLICY If the Nauset Public Schools are closed, all activities/programs and van transportation at the Senior Center are cancelled. If the Brewster Town Hall is closed, the Brewster Senior Center will also be closed. Page 2 January 2017 Brewster, MA This month’s article is about the theft of package deliveries to your home featured on TV news recently. Brazen thieves follow UPS, Fed-X and other delivery service trucks and watch to see where they leave off packages. The thieves see a package being dropped off that they think they can steal without anyone noticing and suddenly your package is gone. If you receive a notice your package is gone, here is what to do. First, file a police report, and second, contact your carrier – UPS, Fed-X, USPS, Amazon et al. Most of the major carriers have information on how to report a missing package right on their websites. Think about installing an outdoor video camera or doorbell camera If you have had a problem that others should know about, please send a brief summary to our FOBE account : friends1673@comcast.net. We look forward to sharing your experiences in the hopes that it may help someone out! IT’S TIME! If you haven’t already done so, it is time to renew your membership for 2017. The term of membership is from January to December 2017. Please stop by the office today to renew and get your new 2017 card! SEA CAPTAIN’S THRIFT SHOP NEWS Thanks to all who visited our Christmas Boutique and purchased some of our wonderful holiday items! Store hours will be Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 10:00am – 3:00pm. In the event of inclement weather, a decision might need to be made to close the shop on that day for the safety of our volunteers. The Thrift Shop will resume its normal 6 days per week schedule in March. We look forward to seeing you in 2017! FOBE IS GOING “HIGH TECH”! Starting in January, we will be available on Facebook! NEW INFORMATION CENTER The COA has purchased a new, large bulletin board that will be placed on the wall opposite the Reception area. JUST A REMINDER… If you are in need of a medical ride to the doctors, etc., please be sure to contact us AS SOON AS YOU MAKE YOUR APPOINTMENT. During the winter months, many of our volunteer drivers become “snow birds”, heading south to warmer climates, so we are limited in the number of rides we can do. The earlier you can call us, the more time it gives us to locate a driver. We ask for a minimum of 4 BUSINESS DAYS (weekends do not count as we are not open), but are always happiest when you give us a longer time period to enlist a driver. Also, with snow-season already upon us, we want to remind you to be wary of icy walkways as well as roadways. If you get services from Visiting Nurses, Elder Services, Meals on Wheels, or are using our Medical Ride program, those individuals really need to have safe access to your home. Make arrangements to have your driveway plowed and your walks shoveled early in the season, and make sure they’re cleared before any volunteer driver comes to pick you up. We want everyone to stay safe this winter! Thank you for your understanding. Page 4 January 2017 Brewster, MA Due to the possibility of inclement weather, we do not have any special events scheduled for January. WAS YOUR NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTION TO GET FIT? Preventing Dehydration — Mayo Clinic 2016 As we age, proneness to dehydration increases in part because the sensation of thirst declines. Thus, older adults may need to be sure they are getting adequate fluids. This may include having set times to have a drink, keeping a daily drink log or making sure to have enjoyable drinks within reach. Extra hydration may be needed during the following situations: ►During an illness — vomiting or diarrhea can quickly lead to serious dehydration. Other symptoms may include fever, nausea, and a sore throat causing us not to feel well enough to get up and get a drink. ►Having a chronic disease — like untreated or under-treated diabetes can cause increases in urination, thus fluid loss. Kidney disease and heart failure also can lead to dehydration. Urinary incontinence could prompt you to drink less to avoid going to the bathroom so often or to avoid embarrassing accidents. ►Taking certain medications — these include laxatives and blood pressure drugs that decrease body fluid. ►In certain environments — being at a higher altitude or in a hot, humid environment can increase your rate of fluid loss. Sweating from exertion also can cause fluid loss. The effects of dehydration can cause fatigue, high blood pressure, cardiac arrhythmias, asthma and allergies, high cholesterol, digestive disorders, skin disorders and even cancer. To maintain hydration, water is the refreshing, zero-calorie beverage of choice. Sports drinks or electrolyte solutions may be preferred during prolonged exercise or with vomiting and diarrhea. A simple plan of two 8-oz. glasses of water before each meal according to a 2010 study published in the journal of dietetic association, can keep you hydrated, and help take the weight off. Sightings from the Poop Deck me-men-to \ n, “something that serves to warn or remind” A belated Happy Thanksgiving, Merry Christmas, and while I’m at it, a very Happy and Healthy New Year. Hopefully you have renewed your FOBE 2017 membership. So here we go after two months rest. It’s no secret around my house that I like to collect “things” that trigger pleasant memories. For example, my father-in-law absolutely forbid me from taking any cuttings from a beautiful blue hydrangea in front of his home back in Clifton, New Jersey and I didn’t dare…..until he sailed away to his hometown in Italy. He never knew and I never told him. After he and my mother-in-law had passed and their home was up for sale, I collected some tiger lilies, a root from one of the fig trees, and some dogwood seeds. When these things bloom I am taken back to some very happy times we spent together. Many new fig trees have been made from that one root and shared with friends and neighbors. Many years ago some dear friends gave me a pair of gloves for my birthday. Those gloves are now worn out, ripped and coming apart at the seams, but I’ll never throw them out. They sit on the front seat of my truck and every time I slip them on I think of those friends and wonder how they are doing. They are off-Cape now in assisted living nearer to family. Joanie Carfora says my garage is full of stuff. She calls it “stuff”, but I know better. I call some of them mementos. Stuff I can throw out, mementos take a little longer, since they all come with a story. I need to recall those stories before they become stuff and get tossed, because I’m sure those stories were good ones. Peter R.
