The shop is open Monday thru Saturday from 10:00am to 3:00pm. Time to Slow Down Lately I’ve been asking myself, “How can we both slow down the speed at which we are spinning through life, and yet, live each day to its fullest?” One clear fact in life, with all of its contradictory messages, is that time keeps moving on, and so must we but at what speed is the big question. I don’t think I’m alone in feeling overwhelmed at times by all the activity going on around me. I know some people who are so comfortable with constant activity that they are very uncomfortable when they aren’t in motion. This leaves them no opportunity for any deep thinking or to get to know their inner selves. When I was in Boston recently, I saw a distinguished looking, elderly gentleman crossing the street. He was dressed in a dark suit, dress shoes, and a beret on his head. He was struggling along, trying to juggle a shopping bag and his cane, while working to corral a leg that wanted to go anywhere but forward. The irritated pedestrians came close to knocking him down as they rushed around him. Having been in similar situations with a body that does only what “it” wants, my heart went out to him but I was too far away to help. All anyone had to do was slow down, offer to carry his bag or give him an arm for support. With an aging society, we need to remember that we aren’t always going to do what we want at the speed we want to do it. Our bodies, at some point, are going to force us to do things their way. So the next time you have to stop for someone, walking or biking, on the bike trail, see it as an opportunity to take a couple of big, long breaths and remind yourself to SLOW DOWN. Alice Plouchard Stelzer NEVER FORGET THE MOVING WALL VIETNAM VETERANS MEMORIAL AUGUST 17-21, 2017 Thank you to all of the people that participated in reading some of the 58,272 names for the recording of the Moving Wall. In 2015, 1.5 million cases of chlamydia were reported to the centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) – the highest number ever reported. Cases of gonorrhea and syphilis also increased substantially. Half of the STIs occur among people ages 15-24, but more cases are occurring among older adults over 65, as well. Yet, evidence suggests that older adults aren’t always aware of their vulnerability and may still engage in risky behavior. For example, a 2012 survey of older Americans indicated that 13% had multiple sex partners in the past five years. If you are sexually active, you can reduce your risk of STIs by staying with one uninfected partner or verifying that you and a new partner have both been tested and are uninfected. Other measures include using barrier protection such as latex condoms—without oil-based lubricants—for each sex act, and communicating with your partner about safer sex practices. Get tested regularly for STIs if you have or have had multiple sex partners. The CDC recommends that all adults be screened for HIV infection once, regardless of perceived risk of having HIV. If you are HIV negative, and feel you are at an increased risk of acquiring HIV, talk with your doctor. BE WELL! LIVE STRONG! LIVE LONG! Charles Altieri RN, Public Health Nurse Did you know? July 2017 Page 11 Sightings from the Poop Deck “Those who expect to reap the blessings of freedom must, like men, undergo the fatigue of supporting it.” Thomas Paine Our kids are all here this weekend. Debbie flew in from Panama City, Panama, Susan from Alpharetta, Georgia, and Pete Jr. has been here holding down the fort. I had minor (very minor!) surgery on May 25 and Pete Jr. had taken a very unflattering photo of me lying down at home resting shortly after the surgery. He captioned it “Breaking my heart” (an overstatement) and sent it out to his sisters. They both looked at it, called each other and decided they had to come home. Debbie got in Thursday night and Pete picked her up at Logan. Early Friday morning she silently came into the family room and very quietly said, “Happy Father's’ Day dad.” What a pleasant surprise! I asked, “What’s the occasion?” and she said she was aware that I had just had surgery and wanted to be here. Later in the day Pete once again disappeared. He was picking up Susan at Logan and here again I knew nothing about it. When Susan came through the front door I began to feel very emotional, our three kids all here together and all I had was minor surgery. Being overcome with emotion on my part was really very short-lived. Early the next morning I noticed Debbie, Susan and Joanie Carfora all showered and coiffed and waiting for the clock to strike nine when the stores opened so they could shop till they dropped. I looked at the three of them and said, “But what about my surgery, I thought you came home to spend some quality time with me?” “Dad, you look great and besides, we were only coming home because your feet were dirty in that picture that Pete sent and we wanted to be sure that you washed them before you took another picture!” It was pretty funny to see the three of them all trying to get through the front door at the same time, but they did it! “Bye” and they were gone. After they had gone Pete Jr. said “Dad, the girls took my car to shop and I need to get to the bank. Okay to take your truck?” So here I sit, alone in the house with no one around, just me and my bandages. I’ve gone from an emotional high to one of a world of reality where the women in my life will use any excuse to travel many miles across the globe just to shop on Cape Cod. So gentlemen, may I offer some friendly advice. Should anyone take your picture while you are convalescing, just be sure that your feet are clean! Peter R.
