Therefore, you are invited to our “Next Steps” Visioning Workshop. We need to discuss ideas that can be implemented right away, ideas that may require more research, additional funding or other aspects to be in place and goals to work towards over the next 5 years. Your input is important to us. A light deli-style supper will be provided. Please call us at (508) 896-2737 to reserve your seat. On Sunday, June 19th, we would like to wish all of our fathers, fathers-in-law, grandfathers and great-grandfathers a wonderful day in their honor. Enjoy it...you’ve earned it! FLAG DAY FLAG DAY is TUESDAY, JUNE 14th. Fly those flags proudly! NEEDS & ASSESSMENT SURVEY REPORT Hopefully, you were able to attend the Community Presentation on April 27th, but if not, you can read the report from the Town’s website on the homepage titled: COA: Public Presentation: The Future of Aging in Brewster. There is a lot of good information from the report about the wants and needs of the majority of our Town’s population. “BEAUTIFY BREWSTER” THANK YOU Thank you to ALL the volunteers for supporting the efforts of our community to clean up our Brewster roads. A special thanks to Debra Johnson, Brenda Locke, Mary Rancourt, Loretta & Paul Ruchinskas and Brenda Vazquez with her son Paul, who focused on the roads near and around the Brewster Senior Center. Page 2 June 2016 Brewster, MA Well this month’s scam hit close to home! My wife got a call from my granddaughter saying she had been in an accident and that she had been drinking and was driving a friend home from a wedding. She bumped into another car and broke her nose. She was in jail and needed $900 to get out on bail. She didn’t want my wife to call her parents because they would take her license away. My wife was asked to call a police officer at a different number to arrange to send the money so she could be released, and to call quickly and don’t call anyone else! My wife was scared but fortunately called me first. I recognized this as the “Grandparent Scam”. I called my granddaughter’s dad and, sure enough, our granddaughter was home, not in jail. Afterward the Brewster Police were called and they came right to the house very quickly. They took the phony officer’s information. They asked what number the phony granddaughter used but it came up as anonymous caller with no number. They told us that this was the second scam in the area that morning. The police advised us that these people hack into Facebook accounts looking for a person who has a grandparent as a “Facebook Friend”. They look to see where the grandparent lives, get a phone number from an online directory and call the grandparents armed with all the background information in the account to make it all sound real – it’s not! The police pursued the matter for us, my real granddaughter called my wife to assure her that all was well and we won’t be answering any anonymous callers any more. If you have a personal experience by internet or telephone that others should know about, please send a brief summary to our FOBE account friends1673@comcast.net. We look forward to receiving your personal experiences and spreading the word through this column. SUMMER BEGINS ON JUNE 20th! Yes, there’s a type of depression - - - Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) ---- that tends to occur only in certain seasons. It most commonly occurs in the fall and winter months, thus the term “winter blues”. But for a small percentage of people, the onset of spring and summer can bring feelings of depression, agitation and anxiety. You might have trouble sleeping and even lose your appetite. It’s unclear what causes summer depression. What’s clear is the importance of caring for yourself during this time to avoid worsening symptoms. Maintain your routine with regular sleeping and waking hours, eat healthy foods, and get regular exercise. Avoid hunkering down at home. Stick to pleasant, air-conditioned outings when you can --- theaters, museums, libraries, or a favorite restaurant. Check into programs at the Council on Aging and other Truro Cape Cod events. If self-care isn’t enough, please talk to your doctor. June 2016 Page 11 Brewster, MA Sightings from the Poop Deck Enough Already - Basta!! Here we go again. It’s the end of April and no matter which newspaper you pick up this week, you will once again see “The Saga of Deflated Footballs.” Will this thing please go away? - I’m begging you, Roger Goodell, you #$%& cretin. Let’s be realistic, the Patriots could have used a beanbag and still would have beaten the Colts kicking field goals with said beanbag you gasbag. Okay, I’m down off my soapbox and about to divulge something very important lest you misinterpret what I have just written and erroneously conclude that I am a Patriot’s fan. I not only root against the Patriots, but I always root for whichever team is playing against the Red Sox, Celtics and Bruins. I’ll explain with a series of clues and when the light goes on do not even bother to call me. Let’s begin with, I am a native of New Jersey and have brought along many of my team allegiances, since moving to New England. Light go on yet? I will shorten this quiz and proudly state that I am a lifelong Giants, Yankees, Rangers, Knicks, and Devils fan, which makes for some very interesting dialogue between Joanie Carfora and myself. Benedict Arnold, I mean Joanie Carfora, feels that when you relocate, you should abandon your lifelong ties and support the local teams. I wonder if she would have felt that way if we would have relocated during the Steve Grogan years? Not to worry though, I do root for the Brewster Whitecaps. Carved on my headstone will be: Superbowl XLII (42) February 3, 2008 - Giants 17 - Patriots 14 and just below it: Superbowl XLVI (46) February 5, 2012, Giants 21 - Patriots 17. I can see them looking down on it now and grumbling, “I’m glad we don’t have to put up with him anymore...stupid New Jersey!” Deep down I’m quietly hoping that Brady will have to sit out the first four games this year just to see that nice little Italian boy, Jimmy Garoppolo show his stuff at quarterback. I might even cheer him on. I will concede that I think Tom Brady will go down in history as the greatest quarterback ever in the NFL, but that’s the only concession I will make. And just to get your hackles up and before I conclude, chew on this: DiMaggio was better than Williams - The End! Peter R. Scheffer (“Life is Good!”) - Go Giants, Yankees, Rangers, Knicks and Devils! June 6, 1944 - The Invasion of Normandy by “The Greatest Generation” June 14 - Flag Day - Fly it high! June 20 - First day of Summer - Summer Solstice June 23-26 - Provincetown Portuguese Festival & Blessing of the Fleet poop deck, n., a deck above a ship’s main afterdeck BHT - BOSTON HOSPITAL TRANSPORTATION Enjoy comfortable and safe transportation from Cape Cod DIRECT to Boston hospitals on a wheelchair accessible van.
