fathers-in-law, grandfathers and great-grandfathers a wonderful day
in their honor. Enjoy it...you’ve earned it!
AUGUST CLOSING
Due to the new Fire Station construction project, the Town is closing us
down for the month of August (Monday, July 31st to Friday, September 1st).
During these 5 weeks, Delphi Construction will tear up our parking lot and
make our current entrance wider to transform it into an entrance/exit area.
New parking spaces will be made which will help us tremendously.
They will also install a new septic system for our building.
During this time (July 31st to Sept. 1st), there will be NO activities/programs
EXCEPT the Meals on Wheels Program which will be
done from another location.
Staff will be working out of the Water Dept. Building, located at
165 Commerce Park Drive. Outreach/SHINE appointments will continue to
be held there also. You can still reach us by telephone at (508) 896-2737
or by using our email addresses. We will still be taking September/October
appointments for: banking assistance, computer help, financial planning,
hearing screenings, legal help, massages, pedicare, Rep. Tim Whelan, as
well as Outreach and SHINE appointments. Our transportation programs
will also still be available.
ANY QUESTIONS? PLEASE CALL US AT (508) 896-2737
Thank you for your understanding. See you in September!!

Aging is Walking Up Hills
I have always loved walking. I think it comes from my childhood when I had to walk miles to school.
My kids hate to hear that one! I did live way down a long winding lane through the woods. I still
remember the excitement of watching for what I might see around the next bend. Sometimes it was a
deer or bunny or, once, a bear.
One of my walking routes when I lived in Connecticut took me up a long hill with many notches. Each
time I reached a crest, I stopped, rested and considered quitting but I always wanted to see what was
just over the next peak of the hill. I was never disappointed because each pinnacle showed me
something new – a wildflower, a dilapidated house rebuilt, a beautiful scenic view, etc. “Just a little
further,” I told myself and on I went.
I see our walk through life as being very similar. As we age through each ridge of the hill of life (feels
more like a mountain sometimes), we are presented with new challenges and experiences. We must
make a deliberate and conscious effort to understand our journey and what it has to offer us to feed our
spirits.
Each decade offers new opportunities and forks in the road and we have a decision to make. We can
either wring our hands, bemoaning how old we are and get out the rocking chair, or we can be thankful
that we have made it this far. Sometimes it’s hard to look at what you can do instead of what activities
are now lost to you.
I intend to continue to embrace life and walk (or crawl if I have to) to see what’s over the next bluff until
I come to the final zenith. Alice Plouchard Stelzer

Let Nutrition Start your Day off Right!
Mayo Health-letter, May 2017
A nutritious breakfast can be a great start to your day - but what makes it healthy? It generally means a
combination of complex carbohydrates, fiber, protein, and a small amount of healthy fat.
Complex carbs such as whole grains, legumes, nuts fruits and vegetables help replenish energy stores
that were depleted overnight and provide vitamins, minerals and fiber - which helps you feel full longer.
Adding in lean proteins, which are rich in vitamins and minerals, also help you delay hunger.
One example is low-fat dairy products, which are important sources of vitamin A and D, calcium, and
potassium.
A morning meal with these elements will help improve your concentration; provide nutrients important
to your heart, bones and other systems; and may help control the amount of calories you take in the rest
of the day. Choose from at least three of the four food groups to round out a healthy breakfast:
●Whole grains: whole-grain bread or bagels, hot or cold whole-grain cereals, whole-grain English
muffins, whole-grain waffles.
●Lean protein: eggs, lean meat, legumes and nuts.
●Low-fat dairy-milk, plain or low sugar yogurts, and low-fat cheeses, such as cottage cheese
and natural cheeses.
●Fruits and vegetables: fresh or frozen fruits and vegetables, 100% juice drinks without added
sugar, and fruit and vegetable smoothies.
Happy and Healthy You!

Sightings from the Poop Deck
“Age is a question of mind over matter.
If you don’t mind, it doesn’t matter.”
Leroy “Satchel” Paige
Annual spring cleaning in the yard has become a real chore of late, probably because I’m not as limber
(or as young) as I once used to be. A recent break in the weather offered us a couple days of opportunity
to get out there clearing brush, cutting trees, splitting firewood and burning the branches that the
winter winds had left for us. Needless to say, it rained on the third and fourth day and while I was
eternally grateful, there was no doubt that even if the sun had shone, physically I was in no shape to
continue with the cleanup….and neither was Joanie Carfora, but at least she was able to walk. My knees
were barking - very loudly.
While I was sobbing uncontrollably I suddenly remembered someone in the past suggesting a gel for
sore joints, a veterinary gel. I remember scoffing at the idea thinking that this person had to be
“joshing” me, but was assured it was no joke and that the “stuff” really worked. It wouldn’t hurt to try
and besides, it could be purchased locally at a nearby Agway. When I walked into Agway, I sheepishly
whispered to the young girl at the counter, “I’m looking for some horse liniment” which admittedly, I
did not know the name of. She looked at me, smiled and loud enough for everyone on Route 134 to hear
said, “You have sore joints too?” I laughed, “How did you know?” As fate would have it, seems that this
time of year there is a run on horse liniment and it was out of stock, but a shipment was due soon.
Oh, my aching knees! The aches of leading a life which included playing (not very well, I might add)
baseball, football, basketball, senior softball and participating in a running club, were coming home to
roost and while I needed help quickly, I would nevertheless have to wait a couple days for the shipment
to arrive.
I’m not sure what effect this gel will ultimately have on me in the future. Will I be drinking water from a
trough, adding 2+2 by stomping my feet four times, or eating from a feed bag? Not sure. However, if
you should see a two-legged creature running along the rail at the Kentucky Derby, the Preakness or the
Belmont wearing the Calumet Farm Black and Gold Silks with a stuffed horse on his back, that would be
me. You may want to consider laying two bucks on me to win….this “gel stuff” seems to be working
quite well!
