Page 2 March 2016 Brewster, MA
This month’s article comes from one of our readers. She relayed an attempted scam that
happened to one of her friends. Her friend received a call after the death of her husband, from
someone pretending to be from their insurance company. The caller notified the wife that the
policy was in arrears and they should send a check before they could pay any claim. The caller
knew all the details that were published in the obituary, but did not know the name of the right
insurance company. The wife recognized that the call was a scam because the caller named the
wrong insurance company!
Please be aware of this scam and if you have a friend that recently lost a loved one, please make
them aware of this also. Thanks!
We remind folks that if you have a personal experience by internet or telephone that others
should know about, please send a brief summary to our FOBE account friends1673@comcast.net.

RECOGNIZING AN EYE EMERGENCY – Mayo Health Clinic Special Report 2/16
Regular eye exams are an important part of good eye health. But some signs and symptoms can
indicate a medical emergency that can’t wait for your regular checkup. Seek treatment
immediately if you experience the following signs and symptoms in one or both eyes:
● Sudden vision loss, including hazy or blurred vision
● An increase in the number or size of floaters
● Eye pain
● Redness or swelling of your eye or eyelid
● Flashes of light
● Sudden appearance of halos or rainbows that form around lights
● Loss of your peripheral vision
● A curtain-like appearance in your field of vision
These might be indications of a retinal detachment—-in which the retina detaches or pulls away
from its normal position—-or other serious eye conditions.
It’s important to recognize these signs and symptoms early and seek prompt treatment to avoid
permanent vision loss.

Are you aware of the Monopoly game going on now at Shaw’s?
If you are a Shaw’s Star Market shopper and are NOT playing the game, and you normally refuse your tickets at
checkout, we have an alternative suggestion! A gracious volunteer has agreed to take any UNOPENED tickets
and keep current with the game, donating any money won back to the COA. What a nice idea! Just bring them
to our office and drop them in the designated box, and we’ll all cross our fingers!

Sightings from the Poop Deck
Uga VII
Woof
Ninety miles north of Atlanta, Georgia, nestled into the mountains, lies the Town of Blue Ridge,
population 1,290 according to the 2010 census. It's a neat little town with shops and
restaurants lining both sides of Main Street. It is also a very "dog friendly" town with a dog
rescue organization setting up every weekend with a sampling of dogs up for adoption. The
merchants here encourage shoppers to bring Fido when they visit and while they browse, water
dishes are set out at the entrances in the event Bozo should become parched. Dog friendly
towns have apparently become popular of late and dog owners can now participate in these day
trips and not have to worry about finding a dog-sitter for the day, an ingenious and clever
marketing ploy to increase business.
On the Saturday following Christmas day, Joan and I along with our daughter Susan, her
husband Rich and two of our grand kids, Meghan and Peter and their two dogs, Hershey and
Truffles, drove up from Alpharetta for a day of shopping, browsing, and eating. At 511 East
Main Street is the Fightingtown Tavern, an exceptionally dog friendly restaurant where dogs eat
and drink first! I don't know how it got its name, but I promise to find out on our next visit.
This is where we met "Uga", the University of Georgia's regal mascot all decked out in his red
sweater emblazoned with the black letter "G." I just had to touch him and wanted to take a
selfie with him, but then people would compare our looks and I would hate to lose to this ugly
pure white English Bulldog, so ugly he's actually handsome. Take a look at the image of Uga at
the top and see for yourself...and don't bother to call me, I already know what you're thinking.
Joanie Carfora thinks I should drive up to West Point and stand between the Army mules,
Ranger III and Stryker so she can take my picture with a caption that reads, “Which one is the
jackass?” Not funny! Some Neapolitans can be mean.
Peter R. Scheffer ("Life is Good!") - Bow Wow!!
P.S. Congratulations to our granddaughter Meghan, who graduated from The University of
Florida, Gainesville, on December 19, Grandma’s 39th birthday. Go Gators!!
