In Memoriam…
It is with sad hearts, but fond memories that we announce
the passing of Henry Sears on January 31, 2017. Henry
was a constant figure behind the wheel of the COA van for
14 years. He helped our seniors on their rides to the COA
for lunch or to Shaw’s for shopping and was the COA’s
“good shepherd” to those traveling to the Day Center in
Orleans, helping to make them feel safe and comfortable.
Henry, husband of Jean Sears our past director, will be
remembered by many as a kind, compassionate, friendly
and funny man. Henry was the type of person who did
“so much for so many, with so little fanfare”.
With this in mind, we would like to memorialize Henry
with a “fish” on our mural and a bench in his honor to be
placed outside once the construction project is complete.
If you would like to donate, please send your check
payable to Friends of Brewster Elders, at
1673 Main Street, Brewster, 02631, or you can just drop it
off in the office. We will keep you informed via this
newsletter as to the progress of the funding. Once we have
the fish and bench ready, we will have a special dedication
ceremony in Henry’s honor. If you have any questions,
please feel free to contact us at (508) 896-2737.

counselors will introduce you to the wonderful world of Medicare A, B, C, and D, enrollment periods,
medigaps, Medicare Advantage plans, and when you should sign up for coverage.

water will be provided by Wingate at Brewster Place.
Frauds & Scams
If you get a copy of this automatic notice from Capital One or USAA, as I did, be aware that these are
scams! The e-mail subject line looks like this and has a very authentic looking letter, complete with
Capital One logos:
“URGENT: Capital One 360 Secure Checking/Savings Verification Alert”
It was very easy for me to recognize these as a scam since I have no accounts with either institution.
This scam is looking for account information and should be immediately deleted without opening it.
If you have opened it and suspect something is amiss, here are the contact phone numbers for alerting
Capital One and taking action:
Customer Service: 1-800-CAPITAL (1-800-227-4825)
Fraud Protection: 1-800-427-9428
We remind folks that if you have a personal experience by Internet or telephone that others should
know about, please send a brief summary to our FOBE account: friends1673@comcast.net

Pick your Protein!
From Health Tips, Mayo Clinic 9/2015
Protein helps maintain muscle mass, fight off infection and enhance metabolism. For most of us, about
45-55 grams a day is recommended. Meat and poultry are full of protein, but the non-lean types can
also be loaded with saturated fat and cholesterol. Swap in other protein rich foods instead, such as:
► Seafood – Consider substituting seafood for meat twice a week. Canned fish and frozen fillets are
great to have on hand for everyday meals. For special occasions try shrimp or salmon.
► Eggs – Eggs contain all the components you need. Put a poached egg over a salad, wild rice or
whole grain toast and you have a meal. Hard-boiled eggs make great snacks. Eggs contain saturated
fat, so aim for no more than one a day, on an average.
► Dairy – Fat-free milk and milk products provide calcium and vitamin D, but also pack a nice
punch. Try Greek yogurt with honey and fresh fruit. Spread ricotta on toast and top with fruit. If you
don’t like cow’s milk try soy milk.
► Beans, peas and tofu – Dried, canned or frozen beans are inexpensive protein options and have
the added bonus of fiber and high levels of antioxidants. Add to salads, pastas, soups and casseroles.
Tofu is a soy-based source of protein you can add to soups, stir-fries and even scrambled eggs.
► Nuts and seeds – A handful of unsalted, roasted nuts is a healthy serving of protein. Spread nut
butters over crackers or toast for a protein filled snack.

Sightings from the Poop Deck
“But she wasn’t around, and that’s the thing when your parents die, you feel like
instead of going into every fight with backup, you are going into every fight alone.”
Mitch Albom
My Aunt Angie (Angelina) was fourteen when I was born and was my self-anointed caregiver, nanny,
protector and enforcer, when my mother went back to work. She was my mother’s sister. Wherever
she went, I went, whether it was in the neighborhood, or on a shopping spree in downtown Passaic,
New Jersey, I was there. When she reached dating age, I sat between her and her date at the movies.
If her date protested, no date! When I think about this today I have to admit to myself that I was a
real PITA.
At the age of four or five I remember playing a favorite game at that time - marbles, and I had a ton of
them in a small, cloth drawstring bag. I played with the kids my age, the neighborhood was Krueger
Place in Passaic, and I was skilled enough to hold my own. I had a favorite “shooter” which I used
until the bully on the block named Rock stole it from me. Rock was about ten and I knew I could never
get it back on my own, so I went home and explained to my “enforcer” what had happened and she
never hesitated. She took me by the hand and marched down the street, got into Rock’s face and said
if he didn’t cough up my shooter she would embarrass him in front of all his friends and beat the living
crap out of him. Rock’s mother didn’t raise no fool. I got my shooter back!
Aunt Angie suffered a very difficult life. She married at the age of 22 and had four kids, my cousins;
three girls and one boy. The oldest girl died of cancer in her early forties, the second had a brain
tumor and fortunately survived, the third, our Godchild, deals with the ravages of MS daily and the
fourth, her son, was in a bad marriage. She became the caregiver to her husband for twenty years
when he went blind with diabetes and was bedridden.
We lost Aunt Angie on January 25th, fourteen days before her 95th birthday in the Emergency Room
at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Paterson. What I lost personally was the one person responsible for
shaping me as a young boy and for whom I will always be eternally grateful.
Ave, Atque, Vale, Aunt Angie, you done good. Now rest.
