This month’s article is edited from the AARP’s ten most common scams and is about how the
scammers get your number in the first place.
The phone rings, you pick it up, say "hello," but there's no one on the other line.
It's a new type of robocall — an automated computer system making tens of
thousands of calls to "build a list of humans to target for theft," according to the
Financial Fraud Research Center. It's the first step in opening you up to many of the
phone-based scams discussed in this article.
Your Plan: If you haven't already done so, ask your phone company to put Caller ID on your
landline. Then simply screen your calls, and don't pick up if the number is unfamiliar, from an area
code you don’t recognize or is unlisted unless you get such calls routinely.
If you have had a problem that others should know about, please send a brief summary to our FOBE
account friends1673@comcast.net.
We look forward to receiving your personal experiences and spreading the word
throughout this column.

Medicare’s Part C (Medicare Advantage Plan) and Part D (Prescription Drug Plan)
Annual Open Enrollment (October 15—December 7) is here! It is very important to
review your Medicare options during this period. You received a notice from your

this period you may have to stay with your existing plan for another whole year.

Caring for the Caregiver – Mayo Clinic Health Letter 9/16
Caregivers face higher risks of depression, fatigue and physical illness. There are times
when you may need to reach out to your doctor, therapist or counselor for help.
Getting help when you need it is not only acceptable but ultimately the best choice for you
and your loved one. Be alert for the following:
►Feeling constantly overwhelmed or as if you’re running on empty.
►Feeling trapped or that you’ve lost all connection with friends and the outside world.
►Easily losing patience or getting angry.
►Feelings of despair, anguish or extreme sadness
►Feeling that life doesn’t matter
►Frequent crying
►Difficulty concentrating or making decisions
►Experiencing appetite changes or severe tiredness
►Inability to sleep
►Excessive use of alcohol or using drugs to cope.
I hope this helps anyone that is providing care for a family member or friend who is ill or
disabled. You are not alone. Millions of people across America provide long term care.
Taking care of YOU, the caregiver, is key to taking care of your loved one.
Dee Yeater RN Public Health Nurse.

Sightings from the Poop Deck
Gerontology 101
August 22 and the rain has finally arrived here on Olde Cape Cod. Not much will get done in the
yard today, but Joanie Carfora will still ask, “What are you going to do today” and I will answer,
“Nothing.” No doubt she will follow up with, “You did that yesterday,” and I will reply, “I wasn’t
finished!” I finally got the last word….I think.
We actually have an early appointment with the dermatologist in Plymouth today and I’m keeping
my fingers crossed that the Monday morning traffic going off-cape won’t be too bad. I am aware
that many weekenders lay over on Sundays so that they don’t have to deal with the Sunday
exodus, which yesterday stretched eight miles back to exit 4 on the mid-cape. I used to think
the Garden State Parkway traffic to the New Jersey shore was bad, but I think this may be its
equal. Still kicking myself for scheduling an appointment during the summer.
Actually, the Jersey Shore is really to blame for these dermatology visits these days. Who knew
way back then that we would be paying the piper, aka, dermatologist, for baking in the sun on
those beaches at Seaside Heights, Long Branch, Sandy Hook, Ocean City, etc. Ah but it was
worth it. What’s a little liquid nitrogen blast every now and then? Ouch! “Hey, that’s my nose,
and don’t make it look any worse than it already is.” If you visit the dermatologist often enough
you will eventually be introduced to new procedures such as Mohs surgery. I laughed the first
time I heard the term, but found out soon enough that it wasn’t funny.
The day had its brighter moments. The rain stopped as we crossed the Sagamore Bridge and
eventually we made our way to BJs Plymouth for some cheap gas, propane tank refill, and some
shopping for things we really don’t need. It’s good to see that BJs now has a filling station right
here in Hyannis and a huge expansion going on in their store. We didn’t stop at Market Basket
this time, but that is usually on our to-do list whenever we are up at that end. Couldn’t think of
anything else we didn’t need.
So enjoy your Columbus Day three-day weekend on October 10. Poor Cristoforo, so glorified and
celebrated when we were kids in grammar school and now so ostracized. Watch out Halloween,
you may be next!
