FIRE PREVENTION SEMINAR
Thursday, October 15th 2:00pm
Brewster COA, 1673 Main Street
BFD’S PETER RUBINO
In conjunction with Fire Prevention Week, we are
having an informative seminar about fire safety. This
will be a great time to refresh your thinking about what
needs to be done to keep yourself safe from fire. We will
also be setting up appointments with you to have a FREE
Smoke Detector installed at your house by one of our
Brewster Fire Department staff. Please call us at (508)
896-2737 to reserve your seat.
Light refreshments will be served.
This month’s article comes from a recent article in the Cape Cod Times
regarding how a local man stopped a Craig’s List scam
for some dishes he was selling.
Craig’s List, itself, is sound but in this case a person pretended to be a local
person too busy to come by and look at the dishes, but liked what they saw on
Craig’s List enough to go ahead and purchase it.
In this case the buyer wanted to send a check for more than the offered amount
of $60 to have the seller forward the dishes to his “movers”. Instead, the seller
agreed to hold the dishes for pickup till the buyer’s check cleared. Despite
refusing to consider forwarding funds to anyone else, a check for $1,000 came
by UPS the next day with instructions to transfer additional funds once he
cashed the check and took his money plus an additional $70.
The seller immediately felt he was being scammed. After checking things out,
he found out that the “buyer” had no interest in the dishes; what they want is for
their victim to cash a very real-looking but bogus check. The check is good
enough that a bank might initially cash the check, then after you have written
your own personal check for the difference and sent it off to the “movers”, the
check will bounce. If he had not felt he was being scammed he would have lost
about $900, but was smart enough to stop this scam in its tracks!
Please help us help each other. If you have a personal experience, either by
internet or telephone that others should know about, please send a brief sum-
mary to our FOBE account at: friends1673@comcast.net
PS: Recently several people have reported either getting actual calls, or voice
messages from the IRS, stating that a lawsuit has been filed by the IRS against
them. THIS IS A SCAM! The IRS does not operate in this fashion. A call to the
Brewster Police Department resulted in this advice: if/when you get a call like
this simply contact your local phone-carrier and ask to speak with their Fraud
Department to report this scam.

In this book, James Levine illustrates the harmful effects of prolonged sitting, which can impact
physical and emotional health. The average adult spends 50-70% of the day in a seated position!
The author doesn’t let you wallow in the bad news. Instead, he offers creative solutions.
Being Mortal
Author: Atul Gawande, M.D.
Dr. Gawande takes on Modern Medicine’s approach to disease and aging, which is to do everything
possible to extend life. When should doctors fix and when should they not? Although the book is
about mortality, it is also about life.
Love & Survival: 8 Pathways to Intimacy and Health
Author: Dean Ornish M.D.
Athough he is known for his work in reversing heart disease with diet and life-style, and more recently
improving outcome for cancer survivors – the title of the book says it all. Love---or the connections
with other people---matters as much as, or more than, many of the health factors that can be meas-
ured, scanned, biopsied, diagnosed and treated with drugs or surgery. To quote Dr. Ornish: “I am not
aware of any other factor in medicine that has as great an impact on survival than the healing power
of love and
intimacy. Not diet, not smoking, not exercise, not stress, not genetics, not drugs, not surgery”.
So now that you have finished your summer novels and Cape Cod recipes, you can ponder fall and winter
reading by the fireplace with the above authors.

Something to Think About...
The Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS) released a survey of research studies that
demonstrate how volunteering for at least one or two hours per week can have a positive effect on the mental
and physical health of older adults. In fact, older adults are more likely than any other age group to benefit
from volunteering. Volunteering provides a sense of purpose and creates an overall greater satisfaction with life. Various
long-term studies related to the physical wellbeing and mental health of older adults have found that those who volunteer
can lower their risk of cardiovascular disease and be less likely to experience feelings of depression. Remarkably, some
studies have even found that mortality rates are lower for those who volunteer on a regular basis. There are lots of
volunteer opportunities on Cape Cod. Why, you could even volunteer here at the Brewster COA!

Sightings from the Poop Deck
“Always remember that you are absolutely unique. Like everyone else.”

Rainy days usually mean a lazy afternoon at the movies, whether at the cinema, or a rental from Apple’s
iTunes. Yesterday afternoon was perfect; dark ominous sky with a light drizzle, so we scanned the newspapers
to see what was offered and opted to rent instead. Now I have to be careful when I am searching on Apple
TV, well aware that if Joanie Carfora sees a film with Jennifer Aniston, then I may be in for a looooong
afternoon! Unfortunately for me, she popped up with Owen Wilson in “She’s Funny That Way,” so I was
doomed. Don’t get me wrong, I like Jennifer Aniston and she had a good run on the “Friends” TV series, but
it seems to me she needs to be more selective in her movie roles.
Soooo, about halfway through this rotten tomato I dozed off and awoke during the credits. Staring at me was
none other than…..you guessed it, Joanie Carfora. I said, “How was it” and she replied, “Not that good,”
Maybe next time she will listen to me when I vote for “Fifty Shades of Grey.” She says, “It’s porn”, and I say,
“I’ll stay awake!”
While I’m on the subject of dozing during on-stage performances, this past Sunday we were at the Cape Rep
for the two o’clock matinee of “Evita.” No, I did not fall asleep, but I can’t say as much for the guy sitting
next to Joan. I think five minutes into the play he was o -u-t….cold! Mind you, we were in the front row, so
the actors couldn’t miss him. I expected a cold glass of water to come flying from the stage when his head
went uncontrollably back and hit the back of his seat. During the intermission he went for a nice walk outside
in the fresh air, came back during the curtain call and when the lights dimmed he was out again. After the play
I could hear his friends laughing and telling him they were going to fit him with a collar that delivers a shock
when he nods off.
It’s overcast and rainy again today. I think Joanie Carfora is playing Mahjongg this afternoon, so I may just
opt to spend the day watching another movie. Anybody up for “Fifty Shades of Grey?”
