This month’s article comes from our own Brewster Police Department website about what to do
if you become a victim of identity fraud.
You receive your credit card statement only to see several items you don’t recall purchasing.
Is it possible that your identity has been stolen? Is someone committing personal fraud in your good
name? The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has released a consumer alert on the Identity Crisis and
what you can do if your identity is stolen. Should you find yourself the victim of identity theft, follow
these steps immediately:
►Contact The Federal Trade Commission – ID Theft
►Contact the Credit Bureau Fraud Departments

experian.com
►Contact all creditors involved
►File a police report
►Contact The Better Business Bureau
Please Contact Officer Shannon Haley of the Brewster PD at (508) 896-7011 for any questions
you may have.
If you have had a problem that others should know about, please send a brief summary

SEE PIRATE TREASURE RIGHT HERE ON CAPE COD!!!
Join us for a trip to the new Whydah Pirate Museum in West Yarmouth
Wednesday, October 5th
Leave the COA at 9:30am and return at approximately 1:30 pm
Limited to 10-12 people
Come face-to-face with the world’s only authenticated pirate treasure at this newly opened museum. The Whydah

unearthed by Barry Clifford.
You will have 1 1/2 hours from 10:00 – 11:30am to tour the museum where you can see 300-year-old pirate coins,
watch archeologists unearth treasure, experience 18th century piracy and even climb aboard a Whydah ship replica.
We will leave the museum at 11:30 and make a stop for lunch at McDonald’s before returning to the COA.
Cost of admission to the museum will be covered by the COA so your only cost is whatever you choose to have for
lunch!
We can provide a limited number of walkers for those in need. Please let us know when you sign up that you will
need a walker. Deadline to sign up is Wednesday, September 28th. For any questions, please feel free to
contact Marilyn at (508) 896-2737.

Please note that the programs we offer here at the Brewster Council on Aging are simply for the
information or enjoyment of those attending and in no way endorse or sponsor any provider or
service. Those in attendance should understand that we do not assume any legal responsibility
for the advice or services rendered by program providers.
Just a reminder – the reason we ask that you call to reserve a seat for these programs is…
Many of our presenters travel a distance to our Council on Aging. If you do not call to reserve a seat,
it appears that there is little or no interest in the program so we cancel it rather than have someone
drive here for only a couple of people.
PLEASE REMEMBER TO CALL IF THERE IS A PROGRAM YOU ARE
INTERESTED IN ATTENDING!

Open Enrollment is just around the corner so don’t delay!
Medicare’s Part C (Medicare Advantage Plan) and Part D (Prescription Drug Plan)
Annual Open Enrollment (October 15—December 7) will be here before you know it
and it is very important to review your Medicare options during this period. You will
receive a notice from your Prescription Drug or Medicare Advantage (HMO, PPO) Plan in
September. Make sure you read this notice—it will explain the changes (premiums,
copays, tiers) to your plan for 2017.
During the Annual Open Enrollment (October 15—December 7), you will have a
chance to CHANGE your plan. This change takes effect January 1, 2017. SHINE
Counselors can help you understand your plan’s changes, screen you for assistance pro-
grams and discuss other options you may have. If you do not change your plan during this
period you may have to stay with your existing plan for another whole year. (Note: the
open enrollment may not affect those with retiree coverage).
DON’T WAIT UNTIL IT’S TOO LATE - Appointments fill up fast! Beginning on
September 15th, please call the Brewster COA at (508) 896-2737 and make an
appointment for this year’s open enrollment with a SHINE counselor. Make sure you
bring your printout from previous appointments with your Drug List ID and Password Date

More Safe Driving Tips...
Driving near School Buses
As we say good-bye to the summer of 2016 and get ready to
welcome fall, we all should take a moment to brush-up on our
safety knowledge when it comes to school buses being
back out on the roads.
Here are some helpful tips:
Remember, when a school bus makes a stop for a pick -up or a drop-off its red lights will come
on. If the red lights are on, it is unlawful to pass the school bus.
Do not pass the bus until all the lights are off and the bus has started moving. Kids are still
entering and exiting the bus as well as crossing the street while the lights are flashing.
Remember that kids will be waiting for the bus early in the morning. With the days getting
shorter and less daylight we have to be extra-aware if we are driving in the early morning
hours.
We have two school zones in Brewster. One is on Underpass Road by the Stony Brook Elementary
School, and the other is on Rt. 6A (Main Street) by the Eddy Elementary School. The speed limit
in the school zone is 20 MPH when the yellow lights are flashing. The lights generally flash in the
morning a few minutes before 8:00am to about 8:30am. They flash again in the afternoon from
2:15pm to about 3:00pm.
Remembering these tips will help all of us to have a safe and happy fall!

Sightings from the Poop Deck
Naked...and Nobody Cares
It has become a real challenge to find something worthwhile as I scan the on-screen TV Guide
for something worth watching. My curiosity becomes piqued as I pause on a program titled
“Naked and Afraid.” Really?
Who dreams this stuff up? I grabbed my iPad and did some Googling. Turns out it’s a contest
which involves two people, a man and a woman, who have never met, and who spend 21 days in the
wilderness without food, shelter, or clothing and trying to survive to win some sort of a prize.
Tsk tsk tsk, no shame!
Picture their first meeting as they introduce themselves. “Hi, my name is Pete and um…...sorry,
lost my concentration, what was I saying? Oh yes, it’s a pleasure to ‘see’ you.” How difficult was
it going to be for 21 days to maintain eye contact only, without peeking? “Sure is hot out here in
the 110 degree heat in this Panama jungle. How about I try to get a fire going by rubbing these
two sticks together while you go out and scout up some grasshoppers to eat with that machete
you brought along?”
I did notice on one of Discovery’s trailers how disgustingly dirty the participants get almost
instantly. It’s almost as though they roll in the mud either to keep the insects off, to cover up,
or to use as a sunblock. How about standing under a waterfall every couple days just for the fun
of it?
I think I’m going to write to the producers and suggest they consider something more
appropriate that we could show at the Senior Centers: “Naked Octogenarians and Nobody Cares!”
No worries about eye contact at this age, after all, we can’t see anyway without our Coke-bottle
lenses. No surprises here. Now, how do you think their introduction would go? “Hi, my name is
Pete. Pay attention and try to focus on what I am saying please. There will be 21 more days for
eyestrain for both of us, but for the time being we need to think about how we’re going to get
through this alive.” “What’d you say Petey? Speak up and talk into this coconut Sonny.” We can’t
hear either! I wouldn’t mind repeating myself so that my partner could hear, but the last straw
would be when she begins pointing at me and laughing hysterically. That could prove to be
somewhat humiliating. Remind me to never share my grasshoppers with her, and yes, please
remind me so I don’t forget.
