Map 4 lot 55. Parking: 62 spaces (winter of 2009/2010 damage likely removed four parking spaces) including two handicap spaces. Permit required June 15 to Labor Day, 9am to 3pm. Amenities: One port-o-let and two trash containers, one bike rack ( 8 bikes) Memorial Day to Labor Day (inclusive). Coastal access point for aquaculture, emergency beach access for boats and vehicles. Erosion: -0.33 to -0.39 feet per year lost. Features: Popular beach in summer. Large parking area. The parking area is protected by a dune that was rebuilt in the spring of 2011 using sturdy fencing and beach grass stems. The current buffer has been successful in collecting migrating sand and stabilizing the dune. Further east is a back dune area currently undeveloped. A wooded/brush covered area adjoins to the southeast, which abuts a small town grassy park. On the northeast side is an eroding bluff; adjacent to the west is a soft structure and stone revetment that causes some end scour to the town property. There is also a groin and the outlet pipe for the Consodine Ditch on the western property boundary. BREAKWATER BEACH Breakwater Beach recommendations Update 1-25-12 Immediate Recommendations: There are two sites marked above that have obvious increased erosion occurring. With the success of the 2011 dune restoration project, we recommend extending the dune (with plantings) and sand drift fencing on the west side of the parking lot and joining it with the adjacent existing fencing. We also recommend erecting a new sand drift fence section on the east side of the parking area with plantings to combat erosion. Improve no dog regulations by adding a highly visible sign at the location marked above. Repair or replace the existing port-o-let enclosure. West side of parking area showcasing the success of Recommended site for sand drift fencing extension dune restoration project. with plantings. East side of parking area recommended for additional sand drift fencing installation and planting. Current beach parking regulations Recommended example of additional NO DOGS Sign. Recommended repairs to port-o-let enclosure. Boards need to be replaced and paint needs to be applied. The parking area is protected by an extensive dune system. State property abuts to each side, with Namskaket marsh to the east, and Linnel Landing further to the west. Status: The coastal dune is accreting (growing) at approximately 0.75 feet per year. The previous wooden boardwalk was replaced with a seasonal ( May – Sept.) sturdy cloth boardwalk that is easier managed with migrating sand. This has ensured handicap access will be available this year. CROSBY BEACH Crosby Beach recommendations Updated 1-25-12 Immediate Recommendations: We have closed off the footpath near the NW corner of the parking lot with split rail and snow fencing. The next step would be to plant additional beach grass and shrubs to promote dune and habitat restoration. Install split rail fence (area marked above) to prevent foot traffic across sensitive dune habitat. These undesignated beach access points have created a series of short cut paths to the beach and have promoted erosion and dune destruction. Improve no dog regulations by adding a highly visible sign at the location marked above. Install no parking signs and split rail fencing at the entrance of the fire road. Last year there was illegal parking in this area that negatively impacted the marsh. Currently there are temporary barricades restricting access to this area. Additional signage and split rail fence would help prevent illegal parking and damage to the marsh habitat. MANTS LANDING Mants Landing recommendations Update 1-25-12 Immediate Recommendations: Install a highly visible sign at the entrance to the parking lot that reads NO DOGS. The stream crosses under the access path near its entrance through an undersized and partially damaged culvert. Status: The coastal dune is eroding at approximately 2.33 feet per year. The coastal revetment has subsided and waves can breach to wash out the northern end of the beach. The northeast corner and western side is most vulnerable to storm and wave damage. With the 2011 and 2012 beach nourishment and planting plan, this area should be able to stabilize and begin to grow in the future. Map 8 lot 9, Map 13 lot 8-9, 29. Parking: 12 spaces (approx) located at the south end of the cartpath to the beach, approximately ½ mile from the beach. Erosion: -0.39 feet per year lost. Features: This landing provides a scenic overview of the bay, and access to a small beach area popular with shellfishermen. Access to the landing is by foot over a long cartpath. This cartpath also provides emergency access to the beach via vehicle to the top of the coastal bank and stairway. Under the care of the Conservation Commission. Status: The coastal dune is eroding at approximately 0.39 feet per year. The existing overlook and stairway is in danger of collapse onto the beach, and needs to be removed and rebuilt. Last year we added about 10 feet in length to the stairway as it ended about 3 feet above the beach. This longer stair was buried into the beach. This year the drop to the beach is about 4’ due to continued erosion. The winter storms have severely eroded the bank, losing at least 10 feet over the last year. Two areas of the dune that show blowouts/erosion were protected with sturdy sand fencing and beach grass plantings last spring. The severe erosion removed about 4 feet of the beach (depth) and the plantings are gone, except further up into the dune in the area of the blowout. DNR installed additional split rail fencing in several areas last year to combat the social trails and lessen dune erosion by keeping people and pets on the main trail and stairs. There is a small freshwater wetland or vernal pool located very near the bluff that will eventually be lost as the bluff erodes south. Spruce Hill Conservation Area South 2012 existing amenities and signage Updated 1-25-12 Spruce Hill Conservation North Area recommendations Update 1-25-12 Spruce Hill Conservation Area North Immediate Recommendations Immediate Recommendations: Currently there is an approved plan to remove the existing stairs and replace them with something that will reduce impact on the dune and provide a safe access point to the beach. In addition to the stairs it is recommended that sturdy sand drift fencing be installed on both sides of the stairs and beach grass planted behind. This will help to stabilize the current dune and act as a buffer during winter storms. Install a highly visible beach regulations and NO DOGS sign at beach access point Evidence of increased erosion because of foot traffic Condition of stairs has become dangerous Replace existing stairs with a low impact design Install sturdy sand drift fencing on both the east and west side of the stairs Spruce Hill Conservation Area South recommendations Update 1-25-12 Spruce Hill Conservation Area South Immediate Recommendations Replace existing split rail fence with emergency vehicle accessible gate with combination lock. The DNR currently has one in their inventory. This will improve maintenance access as well as emergency vehicle access. Install a highly visible NO DOGS sign Update current beach regulations sign Selective pruning and tree removal set for Spring 2012 (DPW) Driveway improvements set for Spring 2012 (DPW) Install a highly visible NO DOGS sign Install a emergency accessible gate with combination lock. Selective limb and tree removal along entrance way Entrance repairs to driveway. Current driveway is broken and signs of erosion are present.
