HomeMy Public PortalAbout2003.095 (06-03-03)RESOLUTION NO. 2003.095 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL, OF THE CITY OF LYNWOOD • SUPPORTING SB 60 (CEDILLO) TO ENHANCE HIGHWAY AND ROAD SAFETY THROUGH THE EXPANSION OF ACCESS TO DRIVERS' LICENSES. ' WHEREAS, existing law requires the State Department of Motor Vehicles ~, (DMV) to require every applicant for a driver's license to submit satisfactory. proof that i~_ their presence in the country is authorized under federal law and that the Department of Motor Vehicles verify the applicant's legal presence; and WHEREAS, Senator Gil Cedillo has introduced SB 60, to remove the impediments to obtaining a driver's license by California residents by repealing current law requinng the Department of Motor Vehicles to see proof of lawful residence in the country under federal law, and by allowing an applicant to use a federal taxpayer identification number wherein current law requires the use of a social security number; and whereas, a high percentage of drivers on the roads of Southern California are unlicensed, and thus unlikely to have insurance as well; and i WHEREAS, the interest of law enforcement is served by all drivers having proper driver's licenses, which SB 60 would make possible, especially among the immigrant population of our state; and WHEREAS, support of SB 60 is necessary to maintain a safe~environment for all who reside in and visrt our City regardless of lawful immigrant status. NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, the City Council of the City of Lynwood does hereby find, determine, order and resolve as follows: , J Section 1. By the adoption of this resolution, the City of Lynwood hereby supports SB 60 (Cedillo) which would allow applicants for a driver's license to use a. .._._ federal taxpayer identification number instead of only a social security number, and which would repeal current law requiring the Department of Motor Vehicles to see proof of legal residence in the United States under the federal law.
