HomeMy Public PortalAboutLEDGE REMOVAL INFORMATIONSEPTEMBER 8TH, 2021 LEDGE REMOVAL INFORMATION 1 85 WALNUT ST, WATERTOWN Proposed Ledge Removal We anticipate there will be in the range of 3,400 CY's of bedrock which will need to be removed for the construction of this Project. This operation will be accomplished using a combination of drilling, small charge blasting, and tractor mounted pneumatic hammer(s) to fracture the rock to a size suitable to be loaded and removed via conventional 12 to 20 cubic yard capacity dump trucks. We expect this operation will take 20 to 40 workdays to complete (depending on the hardness of the rock and the removal method employed). Rock removal will create periods of noise pollution and localized ground vibrations. ARCO has conducted pre -blast construction surveys of the conditions of existing foundations of adjacent buildings. ARCO shall also conduct vibration analysis during our bedrock breaking operations. We are confident that any vibrations generated from our operations will be significantly less than that required to cause any damage. What is Blasting? Blasting is the process of breaking rock into smaller fragments using an explosive. First, holes are drilled in the existing rock. Next, a charge (small explosive) and detonator is placed in each hole. Material is packed at the top of the hole to direct the explosive pressure into the adjacent rock. Then, the explosive is detonated. Broken rock material is hauled away or re -used on site. What is Pneumatic Hammering? Pneumatic hammering consists of using a compressed air -powered hammer to chip away at and break apart large sections of rock. Line drilling will be conducted prior to hammering to weaken the rock surface. Bedrock conditions will become more aparent as light charge blasting and pneumatic hammering operations commence. Hours of operation for blasting, drilling, and hammering will be strictly within 7:OOAM — 4:OOPM, Mon -Fri.
