HomeMy Public PortalAbout2003.176 (09-02-03)RESOLUTION NO. 2003.176 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF LYNWOOD AUTHORIZING THE LYNWOOD WOMEN'S COMMISSION TO CONDUCT A CONFERENCE FOR WOMEN ON OCTOBER 16, 2003 ~ WHEREAS, the Lynwood Women's Commission (LWC) takes a lead role in promoting women issues in the Lynwood community and continues to reach new heights with its varied programs for women; and WHEREAS, since its inception in 1990, the LWC has brought women in the Lynwood community and its surrounding areas together to network, learn and grow by offering a wide gamut of diverse programs from simple High Teas, Fashion Shows, workshops and seminars to community-oriented conferences crucial to the well-being of all women; and WHEREAS, the Lynwood Women's Commission will hold a conference for women on October 16, 2003 at Bateman Hall from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm. with "Shaping the Future Together" as its theme. The sessions will include topics relative to education, legislative, medialpublic relations, and other women issues on domestic violence, health, drugs and gender equity. The estimate cost for this conference is under $5,000. The necessary funding to conduct this event are located within the current adopted 2003-2005 city budget; and WHEREAS, through this Conference, the LWC hopes to raise the consciousness in the community regarding women's issues and initiate solutions to the problems affecting women by way of developing networks, building community support groups, enhancing training opportunities and encouraging interaction among women in the Lynwood community; and W~IEREAS, the conference for women will kick-off with two important proclamations to be presented at the first regularly scheduled meeting of the City Council in October: • National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a public health initiative of the Conference of Mayors to save lives through the early detection of breast cancer; • Domestic Violence Awareness Month derived from the Violence Against Women Act signed into law m 1994 to combat violence against women and to empower and strengthen the victims and survivors of domestic violence. NOW, THEREFORE, the City Council for the City of Lynwood does hereby find, determined, order and resolve as follows: ~ Section 1. That the Lynwood Women's Commission is hereby authorized to , conduct a conference for women on October 16, 2003. Section 2. That City Council authorize staff to work with the Lynwood Women's Commission in order to move forward with activities associated with the planning ~ and conduction of the event. i , }.~.,/ Section 3.
