RESOLUTION OPPOSING NEW YORK CITY'S WASTE TRANSPORT
PLAN DUE TO THE SAFETY AND HEALTH RISK
WHEREAS, the northern section of Middlesex County has been designated as a
key route for the transportation of New York City's trash to landfills in the south
and midwest; and
WHEREAS, it is expected that 10,000 tons of New York City trash will go daily
to the Marine Transfer Station at Trembly Point, Linden before taking a journey
through Woodbridge, Carteret, South Plainfield, Piscataway, Middlesex Borough,
Bound Brook, Metuchen and Edison; and
WHEREAS, it has been determined that any leakage from the nearly mile long
garbage trains would pose significant health, safety and environmental concerns
for the residents of Middlesex County; and
WHEREAS, numerous civic leaders and elected officials have voiced their
opposition to the proposed garbage route transportation plan;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that it is the sense and purpose of
this Council that the proposed New York City waste transport plan be and is
hereby opposed as it presents a grave health and safety risk to the residents of
Carteret.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be forwarded to
all appropriate elected officials in Middlesex County, New Jersey.
Adopted this 6th day of April, 2000
and certified as a true copy of the original
