HomeMy Public PortalAboutR 00:109No. 00-109 Date ol Adoption &PRIL 6, 2000 RESOLUTION OPPOSING NEW YORK CITY'S WASTE TRANSPORT PLAN DUE TO THE SAFETY AND HEALTH RISK WHEREAS, the northern section of Middlesex County has been designated as a key route for the transportation of New York City's trash to landfills in the south and midwest; and WHEREAS, it is expected that 10,000 tons of New York City trash will go daily to the Marine Transfer Station at Trembly Point, Linden before taking a journey through Woodbridge, Carteret, South Plainfield, Piscataway, Middlesex Borough, Bound Brook, Metuchen and Edison; and WHEREAS, it has been determined that any leakage from the nearly mile long garbage trains would pose significant health, safety and environmental concerns for the residents of Middlesex County; and WHEREAS, numerous civic leaders and elected officials have voiced their opposition to the proposed garbage route transportation plan; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that it is the sense and purpose of this Council that the proposed New York City waste transport plan be and is hereby opposed as it presents a grave health and safety risk to the residents of Carteret. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be forwarded to all appropriate elected officials in Middlesex County, New Jersey.
