HomeMy Public PortalAbout2003.206 (10-21-03)Resolution No. 2003.206 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF LYNWOOD SUPPORTING THE ASSUALT WEAPONS BAN REAUTHORIZATION ACT OF 2003 WHEREAS, The Assault Weapons Ban, which bans the sale of semiautomatic weapons, was passed as part of the Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act of 1994 and will expire in September, 2004 unless Congress reauthorizes the law; and ~~ WHEREAS, Before 1994, the availability of military assault weapons enabled '-- violent criminals to commit countless devastating crimes including schoolyard massacr.es, bank robberies, serial sniper attacks, police ambushes and innumerable others that threatened the peace of our communities, the safety and security of our citizens and our law enforcement personnel; and WHEREAS, In.the years immediately following the ban's enactment, the percentage of gun crimes committed with assault weapons fell by more than 50 percent; and WHEREAS, The Assault Weapons Ban Reauthorization Act of 2003 (S. 1034) would strike the sunset date from the 1994 law, reauthorizing the ban indefinitely and guaranteeing that all of the guns banned under the law would remain out of production. These include: 19 specifically named weapons like the TEC-9, AK-47, UZI, and others; and WHEREAS, The Assault Weapons Ban Reauthorization Act of 2003 (S. 1034) would also ban the importation of large capacity ammunition feeding devices and close the loophole that has allowed pre-1994 ammunition magazines to come into this country; and E WHEREAS, The sunset date is fast approaching while gun violence, which experienced a brief decline in recent years is once again on the rise. NOW, THEREFORE, THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF LYNWOOD DOES HEREBY FIND, PROCLAIM, ORDER, AND RESOLVE AS FOLLOWS~ Section 1. That the Lynwood City Council supports the provisions of S. 1034, The Assault Weapons Ban Reauthorization Act of 2003, reauthorizing the assault weapons ban indefinitely, and banning the importation and domestic manufacture of ammunition magazines that can accept more than 10 rounds of ammunition. Secfion 2. The City Manager or his designee shall be allowed to carry out any transactions so ordered by this resolution. Section 3. This resolution shall become effective immediately upon adoption.
