A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF L YNWOOD
' ~ RECOGNIZING KWANZAA
AS A CULTURAL HOLIDAY IN THE CITY OF L YNWOOD
WHEREAS, the City of Lynwood was the winner of the 2003 National League of Crties Cultural
Diversity Award; and
• ', WHEREAS, the City of Lynwood desires to remain active m promotmg cultural awareness; and

} I WHEREAS, Kwanzaa is an African American holiday based on the traditional African festival of

--~ the harvest of the first crops and begins on December 26 and last for seven days; and
. ,
WHEREAS, the word Kwanzaa comes from the phrase matunda ya Kwanzaa, which means first
fruits m Swahili, an East African language; an.d
~ WHEREAS; the Kwanzaa holiday was developed m 1966 m the Umted States by Dr. Maulana
Karenga, a professor of Pan-African studies and Black cultural leader and combines traditional African
practices with African American aspirations'and ideals; and
WHEREAS, Kwanzaa centers around the Nguzo Saba, seven pnncipals of Black culture that were
` developed by Dr Karenga including Ujoma (umty), Kujochagulia (self-determination), Ujima; (collective
work and responsibility), Ujamaa (cooperative economics), Nia (purpose), Kuumba (creativity), and
lmani(faith); and ~
' WHEREAS, Each day of Kwanzaa is dedicated to one of the seven prmcipals, and
WHEREAS, the recogmtion of Kwanzaa is consistent with goal of cultural diversity m Lynwood
and will help expand the learning and cultural awareness of Lynwood Families and Youth.
NOW, THEREFORE, THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF LYNWOOD, STATE OF
CALIFORNIA DOES HEREBY RESOLVE AS FOLLOWS:
i Section 1. That the Ciry of Lynwood joins in with millions of people from around the world and
i hereby recogmzes Kwanzaa as a cultural holiday and encourages residents, ~schools, businesses, and
~~ communtty orgamzation to plan and take part in.related programs and celebrations. ~ ~
Section 2. That the City Manager is hereby authorized and directed to conduct such activrties and
provide such mformation that might be necessary to introduce the concept of Kwanzaa to the Lynwood
commumty commencing with the 2003 season. .
Section 3. That tliis resolution.shall take effect immediately upon adoption. ,
PASSED, APPROVED and ADOPTEED this 16th, day of December 2003.
