HomeMy Public PortalAboutR 00:114No. 00-114 Date of Adoption APRIL 6~ 2000 RESOLUTION URGING THE STATE OF NEW JERSEY TO SHARE "TOBACCO MONEY" WITH MUNICIPALITIES WHEREAS, the State of New Jersey will obtain $7.6 billion from the tobacco industry in settlement of its claims; and WHEREAS, the $7.6 billion will be paid in annual installments over many years, with the Fiscal Year 2000 first installment of $92.8 million; and WHEREAS, the State plans to use $36.4 million to pay for health benefits for State employees participating in the State Medical Insurance Program in Fiscal Year 2000; and WHEREAS, State employees, unlike municipal employees that participate in the State Medical Insurance Plan, are required to contribute to the cost of the State Medical Insurance Plan; and WHEREAS, continued unshared increased costs of the State Medical Insurance Plan, a 7.3% in calendar year 2000, place an increasing burden on municipal budgets, i.e. property taxpayers; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Borough Council of the Borough of Carteret that the State of New Jersey be required to share a portion of the "tobacco money" with those municipalities that utilize the State Medical Insurance Plan for their employees. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be forwarded to Governor Whitman, the Democratic and Republican leadership of the State Senate and Assembly, the Chairperson of the Appropriations Committee, Senator John Lynch and Assemblymen Robert Smith and Gerald Green and the Mayor of each Middlesex County municipality. Adopted this 6th day of April, 2000 and certified as a tree copy of the original on April 7, 2000. KATHLEEN M.
