Tydus RESOLUTION NO. 09-7473 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF OPA-LOCKA, FLORIDA, INSTITUTING A MORATORIUM ON STREETNAMING WITHIN THE CITY OF OPA-LOCKA, FLORIDA, FOR A PERIOD OF EIGHTEEN (18) MONTHS, EFFECTIVE JUNE 25, 2009 WHEREAS, the City of Opa-locka ("City") was founded in 1926 and developed by aviation pioneer Glen Curtiss around the theme "Arabian Fantasy" based on the book 1001 Arabian Tales; and WHEREAS, the City has the largest collection of Moorish architecture in the Western Hemisphere and the City's Moorish architecture is reflected in its Arabian street names such as Sabur Lane, Sultan Avenue, Ali Baba Avenue, Sesame Street and Sharazad Boulevard; and WHEREAS, the City Commission of the City of Opa-locka("City Commission") desires to maintain the unique Arabian theme which was adopted at the inception of the City; and WHEREAS, on May 13, 2009, the City Commission determined by consensus that there should be a moratorium on the naming of streets and the City Commission now desires to more formally express its intent through the passage of a moratorium for a period of eighteen (18) months; and WHEREAS, during the period of the moratorium the City Commission hereby directs the City Manager to survey residents and business owners as to whether dual designations has caused confusion and/or an expense for residents and report back to the Commission; and WHEREAS, the City Commission has determined that a moratorium on the dual- designation of streets is in the best interests of the residents of the City of Opa-locka. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT DULY RESOLVED BY THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF OPA-LOCKA, FLORIDA: Resolution No. 0 9—7 4 7. Section 1. The recitals to the preamble are hereby incorporated by reference. Section 2. The City Commission of the City of Opa-locka hereby imposes a moratorium on street naming within the City of Opa-locka for a period of eighteen (18) months, effective June 25, 2009. Section 3. The City Manager is hereby directed to survey residents and business owners within the City of Opa-locka as to whether dual designations have caused confusion and/or an expense for residents.
