A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF LYNWOOD
SUPPORTING THE DISPLAY OF THE NATIONAL MOTTO "IN GOD WE TRUST" IN
THE LYNWOOD CITY HALL IN THE PROMINENT LOCATION ABOV.E THE CITY

WHEREAS', the word "In God We Trust" first appeared on the ~1864 two-cent com
following an Act passed by United States Congress; and ~_~.

WHEREAS, on July 30, 1956, Public Law 84-120 was enacted by the 84tn
Congress, making "In God We Trust" the official motto of the United States; and~
WHEREAS, Public Law 84-120 formally adopted the motto that had been the
Nation's unofficial motto, which had appeared on certain United States currency since
the Civil War; and
WHEREAS, on February 24, 2010, the City received a proposal from In God We
Trust-America, Inc., a non-profit organization, requesfing that the City Council approve
the prominent display of the national motto, "In God We Trust."
NOW, THEREFORE THE MEMBERS OF THE LY~IWOOD CITY COUNCIL

DOES HEREBY FIND, DETERMINE, ORDER AND RESOLVE AS FOLLOWS:
Section 1. That the City Council approves the prominent display of the
National motto, "In God We Trust", in City Hall at such areas as the Council Chamber
when the new City Council Chambers is built.
Section 2. That the prominent display of the National motto encourages the
residents of Lynwood to reflect upon the historical basis underlying the National motto;
and to regard the display as a symbol of patriotism and love of country.
Section 3. That the public display of the National motto should not be
construed as an approval or preference of a particular religious belief.
Section 4. The City Clerk shall certify to the passage and adoption of this
Resolution. ~
PASSED, APPROVED and ADOPTED this 16th day of March, 2010.
