Who’s Behind the Mask
I know this is the December newsletter but watching everyone celebrating Halloween reminded me of
when I went on a writing junket to Louisiana. I spent some time in New Orleans, quite a treat for a jazz
buff (happily at the expense of the Louisiana Tourism Commission). I brought back several gorgeous
Mardi Gras-type masks.
I used these masks in an exercise that I did with a class of at-risk teenage girls. In the class, the girls
would wear a mask and then pretend to be someone else. I encouraged them to imagine themselves as
someone they admired. The second part of the exercise was to change masks and to dream big, let go of
inhibitions and imagine themselves as the person they really wanted to be.
The essence of wearing a mask is transformation. While behind a mask you can look at yourself from
another perspective. You can be whomever you want. Behind masks we suspend disbelief and our
identities can expand.
With a mask on, you can look at the image in a mirror and see what’s inside of you, without seeing the
external signs of aging. Talk to the eyes about who you really are. For some reason (unknown to me)
the impact is stronger than if you just close your eyes and meditate.
As we approach the new year, it is a great time to get in touch with what you want to do, who you want
to be or where you are going in 2018. I feel it is very important to get in touch with our inner selves on a
regular basis and wearing a mask makes it fun. Try it. If you don’t have one, ask me for a mask.

MEDICAL APPOINTMENTS UPDATE
Volunteer drivers are available for transportation to doctor’s appointments for Brewster seniors,
age 60 and older, who are unable to transport themselves to their medical appointment.
Our drivers, using their private vehicles, will transport you to and from a medical appointment from
your home in Brewster to area doctor’s offices up to Hyannis, for appointments scheduled between
9:00am and 3:00pm, Monday through Friday (no holidays or weekends).
●You should be ambulatory.
●There should be no other stops either before or after the appointment.
●You can schedule no more than one doctor’s appointment a week with our office.
●When calling for a ride, please have the name and address of the doctor or medical facility, and the
date and time of your appointment.
Medical Transportation is provided for non-emergency transportation for individuals who
require routine medical appointments. Please call the COA (508) 896-2737 as soon as you make an
appointment or at least four business days in advance. Thank you!
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!
During this past year, the Brewster Council on Aging has seen a significant increase in the
number of requests for transportation to medical appointments. However, our volunteer
pool has not increased with this ongoing trend. We are searching for volunteer medical
drivers who can help us with driving seniors to their appointments. The schedule is
flexible, we no longer ask you to drive past Hyannis, and you will be doing someone a wonderful service.
If you have a bit of time to spare and think this could be for you, we’d love to meet you! Just come into
our senior center at 1673 Main Street in Brewster, and tell us you’d like to drive! Volunteerism is an
essential part of the Brewster COA. We can’t do it without you!

Christmas is for children so join us as we celebrate with the Kindergarten
students from Stony Brook Elementary. They will be singing some holiday songs,
enjoy a treat and, most importantly, have a visit from Santa. Bring your friends,
neighbors, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, or just come by yourself.
Hearing the children sing and sharing their joy at seeing Santa will add to your holiday season.

ATTENTION SWIMMERS!
There will be no swimming at Brewster Green Resort on Friday, December 22nd and

DO YOU THINK IT’S GOING TO SNOW
THIS WINTER?
TAKE CONTROL of your life and secure a person to
snow-plow your driveway now! The COA gets
numerous calls asking us to recommend someone, but
legally we are not allowed to do that. Therefore, call
your carpenter, landscaper, ask your neighbor who they
use, or maybe they are willing to help do the job for you
at an agreed upon price. Planning ahead will secure
your comfort and safety in your own home, which will
make for a happier winter season!

Healthy Tips - Safe Turkey Preparation
Improperly handled and prepared poultry, including your Christmas turkey is among the top causes of
foodborne illness in the U.S. Keep your holiday guests healthy and happy by:
Thawing poultry properly: thaw your turkey in the refrigerator in a juice-catching pan, not on the
counter. It takes several days to thaw a large turkey this way. A thawed turkey can remain in the
refrigerator one to two days.
Practicing good kitchen hygiene: wash your hands before handling food and immediately after
handling a turkey. Don’t reuse rags, towels, utensils, dishes or pans that have come in contact with
turkey juice, until they have been washed. Wash and sanitize the sink and counter tops after turkey
handling.
No need to rinse your turkey; it isn’t necessary, and it can spread bacteria to other foods and around
the sink and counter. Proper cooking will kill all bacteria.
Cooking the meat to proper temperature: set your oven to 325 F. Use a meat thermometer placed
deep inside the turkey and cook it to a minimal internal temperature of 165 F. Don’t rely on plastic
pop up timers. Cook stuffing in a casserole dish prior to placing it into the bird. When the turkey is
done the internal temperature of the stuffing should be at least 165 F.
Store your leftovers properly with refrigeration or the freezer within two hours. Once carved, place
meat in a shallow pan initially, for faster cooling.
Happy and Healthy Holidays to all of you and your families!
BE WELL! LIVE STRONG! LIVE LONG!

Sightings from the Poop Deck
“Cast a cold Eye on Life on Death, Horseman pass by.”
William Butler Yeats
My only regret after our recent trip to Ireland was that I had not trained and gotten into better physical
shape. It was only ten days, but it totally wore me out. Up at five in the morning to be able to make it to
breakfast at seven and board the bus at eight, and no more than two nights at any hotel. With a bus full
of seniors the worst part was getting on and off the bus and lugging your bags into and out of the hotels
and bus and God help you if you sat in the wrong seat by mistake.
Lots of green grass, sheep, castles, churches, bluffs and mountains, crashing oceans….and food. With all
of that to write about how did I settle on W.B. Yeats’ burial place at Drumcliffe Church, County Sligo?
Maybe I was thinking back to my college days and sitting in my English Lit classes. I didn’t understand
his poetry then so why did I think I could understand him now? You English majors relished this stuff
while we engineers just yawned, rolled our eyes and watched the clock. What the hell was he writing
about and why couldn’t he just write something we could all understand without guessing? Geez, must
poetry always be so complicated?
I could not even guess what Yeats meant with that inscription, but if I could, well I too would probably
be right. So I went to the Internet to see how the experts interpreted it and I found the following, which
I thought the best of the bunch and very profound: “The words urge passers-by to look, with
cold objectivity, at the church (life) and the graveyard (death) and then to continue
their journey (the resumption of ordinary affairs) after a moment of careful
philosophical reflection.” Now why couldn’t I think of that? I love English majors!
If you have a better interpretation, don’t bother to call me; I’m no longer interested. I’m still trying to
figure out where all those beautiful sites we visited were, since it ’s all become a blur. I can tell you one
thing is for sure. Tomorrow I’m sleeping in!
Have a very Merry Christmas and a Happy and Healthy New Year. And if you got anything out of this
piece let it be this: If you’re going on a bus tour to Ireland, Get in Shape and remember
where your seat is on the bus.
