INCLEMENT WEATHER POLICY
If the Nauset Public Schools are closed,
all activities/programs and van
transportation at the Senior Center
are cancelled.
If the Brewster Town Hall is closed,
the Brewster Senior Center will also be closed.
HOLIDAY CLOSING NOTES
The COA will be closed on
Monday, January 1 for the
New Year’s Day observance.
We will also be closed on
Monday, January 15 in honor of
Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.
As we begin a new calendar year, it is always good to reflect on the past year
and develop new goals to achieve in the year ahead. My COA Board members
and I have been working hard to develop a 5-year Strategic Plan from the
results of our Needs Assessment Survey. Going forward, we are planning to
implement many of the ideas that the citizens recommended, which we hope
will increase interest to participate and stay active.
We have hired a new Program Coordinator! Her name is Jayne Clark and she
will begin on Tuesday, January 2nd. If at any time you have any suggestions,
I welcome you to stop into my office to chat. Our goal is to help people stay
active and healthy. It’s all about living our lives well! Denise

Looking for the Silver Linings
I heard an inspiring story at a recent writing group. I told the writer that I was going to steal her story
and share it with you. In a matter of four or five years this woman had many traumatic challenges
coming at her; I don’t know how she didn’t climb into bed and cover her head but she didn’t. She took
another view and after each shock looked for the silver linings.
First, her new husband had a heart attack within a year – her silver lining, he lived. They lived in
New Jersey but had bought a house here and were moving. On moving day, they left New Jersey and
thought the truck carrying all their earthly belongings was also on the road. But it wasn’t! It had
overturned right at the beginning of the trip. When they arrived at their new house on the Cape, they
found pipes had broken and the house was completely flooded from ceiling to floor. It had to be gutted.
So now they had nowhere to live and most of their belongings were damaged beyond repair. They had
no choice but to live in a trailer for a year, while they rebuilt the house and their lives. There were other
incidences, like a second heart attack that I won’t detail.
Did she lock herself in a closet, never to come out? No, each time she looked for silver linings.
Sentimental belongings were saved from the crash. After they gutted the house, they found there were
many problems with the plumbing and wiring that could have caused a house fire. They wouldn’t have
known about this danger if they hadn’t gutted it.
Now, of course, the silver linings don’t pop up for anyone until we’ve gone through the anger, anxiety,
tears and fear. The challenge is to not stay in those negative places.
Have your cry and then look for the silver lining.
Alice Plouchard Stelzer

JUST A REMINDER…
If you are in need of a medical ride to the
doctor, etc., please be sure to contact us AS SOON
AS YOU MAKE YOUR APPOINTMENT.
During the winter months, many of our volunteer
drivers become “snow birds”, heading south to
warmer climates, so we are limited in the number
of rides we can do.
The earlier you can call us, the more time it gives
us to locate a driver. We ask for a minimum of
4 BUSINESS DAYS (weekends and holidays do
not count as we are not open), but are always
happiest when you give us a longer time period to
enlist a driver.
Also, with snow-season already upon us, we want
to remind you to be wary of icy walkways as well
as roadways. If you get services from Visiting
Nurses, Elder Services, Meals on Wheels, or are
using our Medical Ride program, those
individuals really need to have safe access to your
home. Make arrangements to have your driveway
plowed and your walks shoveled early in the
season, and make sure they’re cleared before any
volunteer driver comes to pick you up.
We want everyone to stay safe
this winter!
Thank you for your understanding.

Health Tips (Mayo clinic): Stopping a nose bleed
Most people experience a nose-bleed at one time or another. Bleeding often results from a cold, a sinus
infection, dry air (most common in the winter), a scab being dislodged or use of certain medications,
such as nasal steroids. Most nose-bleeds are easily treated with these simple steps:
Sit up - This decreases the pressure in the veins of your nose, which slows the flow of blood.
Leaning slightly forward will help you avoid swallowing blood.
Blow - Very gently blow your nose once or twice to remove any clotted blood.
Pinch - Pinch the front, soft part of your nose with your thumb and index finger and
breathe through your mouth. Do this for about five minutes. The pressure should stop the
blood flow. Repeat for ten minutes if needed.
Ice - Using an ice pack on the bridge of your nose helps constrict blood vessels for quicker clotting.
To keep the bleeding from starting again, don’t pick or blow your nose for a few days, and don’t strain
or bend down for several hours. Seek prompt medical attention for any nose -bleed resulting from a
head injury or if the bleeding doesn’t stop after 30 minutes.
To help prevent future nose-bleeds, keep the interior lining of your nose moist. Regularly apply
petroleum jelly inside your nose and use a humidifier to moisten the air in your home.
If you have recurring nose-bleeds, talk to your doctor about steps you can take to avoid them.
Your doctor may want to take a closer look at your nasal passages or refer you to an ear, nose and
throat specialist. If you’re on a blood thinner, your doctor may want to adjust the dose.
Happy and Healthy New Year!

Sightings from the Poop Deck
“You can observe a lot by just watching.” Lawrence Peter Berra
Our grandson Peter is a senior at Auburn University in Auburn, Alabama. When he first committed to
Auburn, Joanie Carfora made it known to him that she wanted to see an Auburn Tigers football game
at Jordan - Hare Stadium before he graduated, and since time was running out, we coupled our
Thanksgiving trip to Georgia this year with a game against the University of Louisiana Monroe.
I would have preferred the following Saturday, since #1 Alabama was coming to Auburn, but we just
couldn’t make it happen.
After the game Joanie Carfora rode back to Georgia with our daughter Susan and I tagged along with
Pete, which gave me a full two and a half hours alone with my grandson, which I really looked forward
to. It’s not very often that grandfathers get to be the recipients of some very inside stuff with their
grandkids, and rather than me dominating the conversation I just helped it along with very few
questions. I learned more from my grandson’s future plans in that fleeting two and a half hours than I
did in his previous twenty-one years. To alter one “Yogiism,” you can hear a lot by just listening!
I can honestly admit that Pete pretty much has it all together and knows which direction he will be
heading after graduation next May, and Joanie Carfora and I will be there at graduation, as we have
been for all the others. He loves Auburn and will be sorry to leave, since he has really participated in,
and experienced, a happy college life to the fullest. “It’s been fun!” He is grateful that he will not be
burdened with a hefty college loan thanks to his supportive parents. He also confessed that even
though he is carrying a 3.5 GPA, he could have probably done much better had he applied himself, but
that would have cut into his social life, so he is content with the status quo. As a comparison, if I had
spent ALL my time studying I would have never gotten close to 3.5, so thankfully, he hasn't inherited
that gene from my gene pool.
I also found out that after graduation his sights are set on one of the big cities, e.g., Los Angeles,
New York, or Boston, (not Brewster) depending where the job offers come from, and you can guess
which would be my preference for him. After all, just think how much more I could share with you
given another two and a half hours.
His name may be Peter and obviously you might conclude that of our six grandkids he would be my
favorite, but no, as grandparents you know better (wink wink). Grandparents don’t have favorites…
right? “We love them all the same - only different!!”
By the way, Auburn beat #1 Alabama the following Saturday 26-14…..War Eagle!
Peter R. Scheffer (“Life is Good!”) - Georgia beat Auburn 28-7 for the SEC championship on Saturday,
