HomeMy Public PortalAbout10-8127 Community Access Preservation Act Sponsored by: Mayor Kelley Resolution No. 10-8127 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF OPA-LOCKA,FLORIDA TO URGE CONGRESS TO SUPPORT H.R. 3745, THE COMMUNITY ACCESS PRESERVATION ACT (CAP), WHICH ADDRESSES CRITICAL AND IMMEDIATE OPERATIONAL AND FUNDING THREATS TO LOCAL PUBLIC, EDUCATIONAL AND GOVERNMENT (PEG) ACCESS CHANNELS; PROVIDING FOR INCORPORATION OF RECITALS; PROVIDING FOR AN EFFECTIVE DATE. WHEREAS,the City of Opa-locka recognizes that the Public,Educational,and Government (PEG) access channels are a uniquely situated valuable sources for local information for the residents; and WHEREAS, the Public,Educational,and Government(PEG)channels televise coverage of local government meetings,including city commissions,planning commissions,county and school board meetings, educational institutions and nonprofit organizations, in detail; and WHEREAS, the Public,Educational,and Government(PEG)channels are one of the last surviving sources for local television programming across the country and play a significant role within municipalities to communicate with the citizens on municipal events, and advisories and preparation directions to residents for emergency purposes, information that no other media outlet provides; and Resolution No. 10-8127 WHEREAS, HR 3745, the Community Access Preservation(CAP)Act, addresses critical and immediate operational and funding issues regarding the Public, Educational and Government (PEG) channels; and WHEREAS,it is important to preserve funding for the Public,Educational and Government (PEG)channels,and to ensure that the channels continue to be available to the entire community to serve the residents of Florida municipalities; and WHEREAS,the CAP Act would allow PEG fees to once again to be used for any legitimate PEG expense, instead of restricting PEG fees to capital expenses only; and WHEREAS, the City Commission of the City Of Opa-Locka, Florida urges Congress to Support H.R. 3745, The Community Access Preservation Act(CAP): NOW,THEREFORE,BE IT DULY RESOLVED BY THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF OPA-LOCKA,FLORIDA: Section 1. The recitals to the preamble herein are incorporated by reference. Section 2. The City Commission of the City of Opa-Locka, Florida urges Congress to support H.R. 3745, the Community Access Preservation Act (CAP), which addresses critical and immediate operational and funding threats to local Public, Educational and Government access channels.
