RESOLUTION NO. 10-8142
A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE
CITY OF OPA-LOCKA, FLORIDA TO AUTHORIZE THE
CITY MANAGER TO ACCEPT THE DEPARTMENT OF
JUSTICE, OFFICE OF JUSTICE PROGRAM (OJP) WEED
AND SEED COMPETITIVE CONTINUATION GRANT IN
THE AMOUNT OF ONE HUNDRED FIFTY-SEVEN
THOUSAND DOLLARS ($157,000.00), WITH A REQUIRED
MATCH BY THE CITY OF OPA-LOCKA IN THE
AMOUNT OF FIFTY-TWO THOUSAND THREE
HUNDRED THIRTY-THREE DOLLARS ($52,333.00),
PAYABLE FROM ACCOUNT NO. 29-529529; PROVIDING
FOR INCORPORATION OF RECITALS; PROVIDING FOR
AN EFFECTIVE DATE
WHEREAS, the City Commission of the City of Opa-locka, by Resolution 10-8015,
authorized the City Manager to submit a continuation application for the Weed & Seed grant, which
has now been accepted by the Department of Justice; and
WHEREAS, the City Commission of the City of Opa-locka desires to accept the Office of
Justice Program (OJP) Grant for the City's continuation of the Weed and Seed Communities
Competitive Program; and
WHEREAS, the proceeds from the grant will be used to enhance the continuation of the
current Weed and Seed program; and
WHEREAS, the enhancements will provide increased policing, visibility, accessibility,
prevention, intervention on behalf of the law enforcement, and will also aid in neighborhood
restoration goals; and
WHEREAS, operation Weed and Seed is a strategy that aims to prevent, control, and
reduce violent crime, drug abuse and gang activity in designated high-crime neighborhoods; and
WHEREAS, the City Commission of the City of Opa-locka desires to authorize the City
Manager to accept the Office of Justice Program (OJP) in the amount of $157,000 for the
continuation of the City of Opa-locka's Weed and Seed Program:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT DULY RESOLVED BY THE CITY COMMISSION OF
THE CITY OF OPA-LOCKA,FLORIDA:
Section 1. The recitals to the preamble herein are incorporated by reference.
Section 2. The City Commission of the City of Opa-locka, hereby authorizes and directs
the City Manager to accept the Office of Justice Program (OJP) grant in the amount of $157,000,
with the City of Opa-locka matching funds in the amount of$52,300.00, payable from Account No.
10-8015 for the continuation of the Weed and Seed Program.
Section 3. This resolution shall take effect immediately upon adoption.

Request: STAFF IS REQUESTING THAT THE CITY COMMISSION OF OPA-
LOCKA AUTHORIZES THE ACCEPTANCE OF THE DEPARTMENT OF
JUSTICE WEED AND SEED COMMUNITIES COMPETITIVE PROGRAM
CONTINUATION GRANT FOR THE AMOUNT OF ONE HUNDRED AND
FIFTY SEVEN THOUSAND DOLLARS ($157,000) WITH A REQUIRED
MATCH OF FIFTY TWO THOUSAND THREE HUNDRED THIRTY
THREE DOLLARS ($52,333.00) PAYABLE FROM ACCOUNT NUMBER 29-
529529.
Description: Operation Weed and Seed is a community-based initiative that encompasses an innovative
and comprehensive multi-agency approach to law enforcement, crime prevention, and
community revitalization. Operation Weed and Seed is a strategy that aims to prevent,
control, and reduce violent crime, drug abuse and gang activity in designated high-crime
neighborhoods across the country. Only approved Weed and Seed Continuation Sites in
good standing were eligible to apply for funding. The proceeds from the award will be used
to enhance the current Weed and Seed program by continuing and increasing community
policing goals including increasing law enforcement visibility and accessibility; prevention,
intervention and treatment goals including decreasing the incidence of juvenile crime; and
neighborhood restoration goals including improving the safety and appearance of the city
and properties.
