Meeting called to order at 4PM
Attending Meeting: Todd Cestari, Phil Powers, Sue Hadley, Mark Kosa, Kim Hesse, Kim Harvey, Linda
Katz, Margie Wiggins, Ron Foisy, Doug Priore, Jean Vazza,
Others Attending: Jane Roche and Dorothy Maruska.
We opened the meeting at the Hopkinton YMCA with a team building session. We identified major
goals of cohesiveness, community, trust and a unified vision.
We moved inside at 6PM to begin the annual planning portion of our meeting. A motion to approve
October agenda was made and seconded, approved unanimously.
First order of business was to identify and approve the major responsibilities of the members of the
youth commission. The two main areas identified were attendance at the monthly commission
meetings, and participation in youth commission committees. The attendance standard was discussed
that all commission members seek to attend all meetings. We typically have ten meetings per year, and
we agreed that commission members need to attend at least 80% of those meetings. Additional works
needs to be completed to determine what action is to be taken if this standard is not achieved.
We moved on to the nomination of Chairman and Vice‐Chairman for the 2010‐2011. Nominations were
opened, and Ron Foisy was nominated for Chairman, seconded, and approved. Kim Harvey was
nominated for Vice‐Chairman, seconded and approved.
The next area addressed was committee participation. The youth commission needs to be an active
group, with all members actively contributing in some fashion. We decided that all commission
members need to be a member of at least one committee, and that each committee is chaired by a
youth commission member. Each committee will establish its own activity level, and report back to the
youth commission each month.
We spent the balance of the meeting identifying the potential committees of the youth commission, and
the major initiatives we will pursue. Here is the list we assembled during this session (in no particular
order):
MLK Day
beFree
Skate Park
Early Release
It Takes a Village
Web Site
Volunteer Recruitment
Drug Free Grant
Other Grants
Community Education and Risky Behavior Prevention
Middle School Focus Groups
Youth Leadership Academy
This list contained more items than we could process in the time we had for this meeting. Further
discussion will follow to try to define these items, identify overlap, if any, and then identify which youth
commission members will work on which areas.
A motion was made and seconded to call a special meeting of the Youth Commission for Tuesday,
October 26th, at 7PM to continue the discussion of committee goals, definitions and committee
assignments. The location has yet to be determined.
The meeting was adjourned at 8:35PM. Next regular meeting will be November 10th, at 7PM, lower
level of town hall.
