HomeMy Public PortalAbout2010.107 (05-18-10)RESOLUTION NO. 2010.107 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF LYNWOOD AUTHORIZING THE MAYOR OR DESIGNEE TO EXECUTE AN AGREEMENT WITH SPRINT/NEXTEL TO PROVIDE THE CITY WITH ITS CELLULAR PHONE AND WIRELESS DATA SERVICE NEEDS WHEREAS, On November 17, the City Council authorized the release of an RFP for cellular phone and wireless data services and received proposals from AT&T, Sprint/Nextel, T-Mobile, and Verizon; and WHEREAS, the City currently has 110 cellular phones and 10 data cards used by ten City departments; and WHEREAS, staff formed a selection committee consisting of five members to review the proposals and rate vendors using a scoring sheet and ultimately chose T- Mobile but were dissatisfied with service; and WHEREAS; at a department head meeting on April 21, 2010, directors voiced complaints about tfie current; cellular provider (T-Mobile) citing poor reception and dropped calls; and WHEREAS, feedback from directors, management, and general staff showed a clear dissatisfaction with T-Mobile service and also cited the need for two-way-radio (push-to-talk PTT) functionality for quick access to staff and safety reasons; and WHEREAS, an urgent need is present to change cellular service to a carrier that can meet the City's needs~for reliability and safety; and .~ , ,., . WHEREAS~; staff recommends moving back to Sprint, as the second runner up in the November 17, 2009 request for proposals; and WHEREAS, Sprint further offers excellent push-to-talk capabilities and is a tried and tested service that works well for the City; and WHEREAS, the new pooled Sprint plan will be approximately $57,000 per year, which is 24% less than the $74,816 spent on cellular and wireless data in FY 08-09 and approximately $10,000 less than the amount projected in FY09-10. NOW, THEREFORE, THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF LYNWOOD DOES HEREBY RESOLVE AND DETERMINE AS FOLLOWS: Section 1. That the City Council of the City of Lynwood approves and authorizes the Mayor or designee to execute an agreement with Sprint/Nextel to provide the City with its cellular phone and wireless data service needs in an amount not to exceed $57,000 per year. Section 2. That the City Council of the City of Lynwood approves and authorizes the Mayor or designee to terminate service with T-Mobile. Section 3. This Resolution shall.go into effect.immediately upon its adoption. PASSED, APPROVED and ADOPTED this 18th day of May, 2010.
