HomeMy Public PortalAboutORD14744 BILL NO. 2010-83 SPONSORED BY COUNCILMAN fr /4T j� '' Medin ORDINANCE NO. 1 �I 1 AN ORDINANCE OF THE CITY OF JEFFERSON, MISSOURI, AUTHORIZING A REFERENDUM ON IMPOSING A LICENSE TAX OF SEVEN PERCENT(7%) ON HOTEL AND MOTEL ACCOMMODATIONS. BE IT ENACTED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF JEFFERSON, MISSOURI, AS FOLLOWS: SECTION 1. Subject to voter approval as set out in Section 3, the Council hereby repeals section 17-63 and enacts a new section 17-63 in lieu thereof, to read as follows: Sec. 171763. Levy of Tax. In addition to the license fees levied on hotels and motels pursuant to Article IV of Chapter 17 there is hereby levied upon the charges for all sleeping rooms paid hy the transient guests of hotels or motels situated in the gjjy a tax of seven ep rcent 7( %I per occupied room per night. Every ep rson collecting such a charge for sleeping rooms shall collect the tax and remit the same to the City. The tax shall be itemized separately on each bill.The term "transient uE est" as used herein shall have the definition as provided in Section 67.1000 RSMo. SECTION 2. The City Council of the City of Jefferson, Missouri, hereby submits to the voters of the City of Jefferson at an election to be held on February 8, 2011, this proposal to tax hotels and motels to promote conferences, conventions, and visitors in the City. The ballot of submission shall contain, but is not limited to, the language substantially similar to the following language: PROPOSITION A Shall the City of Jefferson levy a tax of seven percent (7%) percent on each sleeping room occupied and rented by transient guests of hotels and motels located in the city, where the proceeds of which shall be expended for promotion of tourism? This ordinance shall not become effective unless a majority of the qualified voters of the City voting in the February 8, 2011 election approve the levy of the tax set forth in this ordinance. If a majority of such voters approve the levy, this ordinance shall be in full force and effect from and after April 30, 2011.
