HomeMy Public PortalAbout12-8325 Local Police to Establish a Joint Task Force for Eliminating Violent Crime Sponsored by:Vice Mayor Johnson RESOLUTION NO. 12-8325 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF OPA-LOCKA, FLORIDA TO SUPPORT THE EFFORTS OF THE UNITED STATES ATTORNEY, STATE ATTORNEY, AND LOCAL POLICE TO ESTABLISH A JOINT TASK FORCE FOR ELIMINATING VIOLENT CRIME AND GANG VIOLENCE IN DISTRICT 1; PROVIDING FOR INCORPORATION OF RECITALS; PROVIDING FOR AN EFFECTIVE DATE. WHEREAS, violent crime and gang violence are real problems affecting the lives of citizens in District 1; and WHEREAS, these crimes are not self-contained as their impact sadly spills over into our community's streets needlessly taking the lives of innocent bystanders, children, and police officers; and WHEREAS, these crimes have a devastating impact on local communities by causing citizens to live in fear; and WHEREAS, reducing gang violence and violent crime will have an undeniably positive impact by making the community a safer place to live for years to come; and WHEREAS, successfully addressing this problem will require the combined efforts of local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies; and WHEREAS, joint task forces have experienced success at reducing violent crime and gang violence in South Florida by combining the unique expertise of each respective law enforcement agency toward one, unified purpose; and WHEREAS, the United States Attorney, State Attorney and local police have engaged in similar efforts to establish a joint task force directly addressing the gang violence and violent crime in District 1; and Resolution No. 12-8325 WHEREAS, it is time to send a very clear message to all of those engaged in violent crime and gang violence that they will be found and prosecuted to the full extent of the law. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT DULY RESOLVED BY THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF OPA-LOCKA, FLORIDA: Section 1. The recitals to the preamble herein are incorporated by reference. Section 2. The City Commission of the City of Opa-locka hereby agrees to support the efforts of the United States Attorney, State Attorney, and local police to establish a joint task force for eliminating violent crime and gang violence in District 1.
