HomeMy Public PortalAbout12-8356 Police Department to Created a Community Policing Strategy Sponsored by: City Manager RESOLUTION NO. 12-8356 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF OPA-LOCKA, FLORIDA TO AUTHORIZE THE CITY MANAGER TO DIRECT THE OPA-LOCKA POLICE DEPARTMENT TO CREATE A COMMUNITY POLICING STRATEGY, AS PART OF THE TRANSFORMATIONAL PLAN FOR THE CHOICE NEIGHBORHOOD INITIATIVE (CNI) APPLICATION; PROVIDING FOR INCORPORATION OF RECITALS; PROVIDING FOR AN EFFECTIVE DATE WHEREAS, the City of Opa-locka City Commission strongly supports the Opa-locka Community Development Corporation's (CDC) Choice Neighborhood Initiative (CNI) application; and WHEREAS, the City Manager shall direct staff to create a community policing strategy, which shall be implemented through the Chief of Police of the Opa-locka Police Department; and WHEREAS, the City Commission of the City of Opa-locka desires to authorize the City Manager to create a community policing strategy and implement that strategy through the Opa-locka Chief of Police. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT DULY RESOLVED BY THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF OPA-LOCKA, FLORIDA: Section 1. The recitals to the preamble herein are incorporated by reference. Section 2. The City Commission of the City of Opa-locka, hereby authorizes the City Manager to direct staff through the Opa-locka Police Department to create a community policing strategy, including a full-time police officer (based on a five year period, estimated in-kind value at $260,000), in support of the CNI application. Section 3. This resolution shall take effect immediately upon adoption. Resolution No. 12-8356 PASSED AND ADOPTED this 20`h day of March, 2012. Staff Summary: The Opa-locka Community Development Corporation has requested that the City of Opa-locka pass a resolution supporting the CNI application by creating a community policing strategy. Staff recommends that the City Commission direct the City Manager to create a community policing strategy for the neighborhood affected. The resolution also defines the community policing strategy through the Chief of Police of the Opa-locka Police Department. The estimated in-kind value to the affected area is $260,000 over a five year period, based on the cost of one full-time police officer. Proposed Action: Staff Recommends Approval of the proposed Resolution. Attachment: None.
