WORK SESSION

COMMUNITY CONVERSATION — LOCAL OPTION TAX
City Clerk BessieJo Wagner presented a review of the Local Option Tax that is to go before the
voters in May 2018. The Idaho State Attorney General office has guidelines they have indicated
they want followed so the current structure is in some need of adjustment. She went over the
recommended changes and explained the reasons behind the change. Some of the topics she
covered was the definition of a local option tax (LOT), who can legally receive LOT revenue, and
what the LOT can fund.
The room was broken into round table groups with a Council Member or staff person at each table.
Each table discussed at length what the community would like to be funded with the 3%
Occupancy Local Option Tax. Feedback collected by the City liaison or Council Member and each
table shared what they had discussed with the rest of the group. The feedback was collected by
staff to be brought back to the Council for discussion at a future work session.
WRAP UP
The summary below outlines the public responses during the breakout session to each purpose of
use. Each table rated importance of each item or whether they chose the item as one they would
like to keep, remove or change.
