DATE: June 7, 2005
TO: Honorable Chairman & Directors of Lynwood Information
Incorporated
APPROVED BY: N. Enrique Martinez, City Manager
PREPARED BY: Delania Whitaker, Administrative Assistant
SUBJECT: NEW DIRECTV INTERACTIVE SERVICES
Recommendation:
Staff recommends that the Board of Directors of Lynwood Information
Incorporated receive and file this report.
Background:
In May 2005, DirecTV Incorporated launched the first of its new interactive
services. Direct-broadcast satellite receivers capable of activating the DirecTV
Active service should receive the software downloads for the service via satellite
within a months time.
Discussion & Analysis:
The new DirecTV services provide a wide range of options including access to
local weather, horoscopes., lottery updates, mosaic screens (mix channels) with
interactive links to several networks in a program genre, as well as enhanced a
programming guide. The programming guide includes video previews and
suggestions for television viewing.
The current version of DirecTV Active is free to customers. The main features
include the following:
• Main Screen -displays stock market summaries and local weather
information. Also, a video loop provides customer care and Pay-Per-View
highlights.
• Weather -provides current and five day local weather for more than a
thousand U.S. cities.
• Mix Channels -enables subscribers to view up to six live channels from
different networks on just one screen.
• Horoscope -provides customers with the ability to check their horoscopes AGENDA
on a daily basis by clicking on an astrological sign. ITEM

Lottery -offers up to the minute results from 38 lotteries in the U.S.
DirecTV senior vice president Eric Shanks asserts that DirecTV Active will be
marketed more heavily in the fall when there is a more sizable base of customers
that have interactive-capable receivers. Customers that have purchased
DirecTV boxes since May 2004 have the ability to receive DirecTV Active
software downloads.
DirecTV asserts that it will have the capability to offer more advance interactive
television services later in the year.
