RESOLUTION NO.
RESOLUTION ADOPTING
REGULATIONS CONCERNING DISCHARGE
OF WATER FROM SUMP PUMPS
WHEREAS, the City of Medina has enacted an ordinance prohibiting the
discharge of water from sump pumps into the sanitary sewer; and
WHEREAS, the City wishes to establish regulations governing the connection
and plumbing of sump pumps in order to ensure the proper discharge of water.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of
Medina that all sump pumps shall be installed and maintained in accordance with the
following regulations.
1. All plumbing associated with the sump pump must be composed of rigid pipe.
Galvanized, copper and P . V . C . , are examples of acceptable piping. Flexible
rubber and neoprene hoses are examples of unacceptable materials. The only
exception to the above is that a small piece of flexible hose may be used to
provide insolation from pump vibrations and noise.
2. Sump plumbing must be installed in a permanent manner and must exit through
a wall. The discharge may not pass through a window or vent.
3. The discharge may be an open ended hose, or may be piped into a dry well.
The discharge may not be piped directly onto the street or directed towards
the street, but may be piped into a swale or culvert with permission from the
Medina public works department.

4 . No plumbing may be connected in any way to the sanitary sewer system either
inside or outside the structure. Any connections must be eliminated and
permanently capped .
5. The plumbing from the sump pump may not contain any tees, wyes, diverting
valves, or other entrances except for multiple pumps or multiple discharges .
6. No channels or floor cuts are allowed between a sump well and an adjacent
floor drain.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED by the City Council of the
City of Medina, that the director of public works shall be responsible for
interpretation and enforcement of the above regulations and is hereby authorized
and directed to take such steps as may be deemed necessary to carry out the
regulations , including inspections of sump pump installations at any reasonable time .
