Minnesota Women in City Government
Honor Mayor Weir with 2014 Leadership Award
Medina Mayor Elizabeth Weir was recognized on
June 18th as the winner of the 2014 Minnesota Women
in City Government (MWCG) Leadership Award. The
award was given as part of the League of Minnesota Cit-
ies Annual Conference in St. Cloud. Each year, nomina-
tions for the MWCG Leadership Awards are open to all
elected and appointed women, who are Minnesota State
officials. Award recipients are recognized for individual
achievement in their cities, as well as leadership and men-
toring roles within and beyond their communities.
Mayor Weir is recognized for leadership that serves
as a model for the local government profession. Her
strengths are particularly in the areas of trust, respect,
civility and collaborative decision-making. During her
almost 10 years in office, she has pioneered the imple-
mentation of a variety of environmental practices that
will help to preserve Medina’s open spaces, woodlands
and greenway corridors. She is recognized for her work
to improve water quality in Medina’s impaired lakes and
streams. Last year, she received the Lake Independence
Citizens Associations’ Friends-of-the-Lake Award as well
as the Outstanding Contribution Award, given by the
Minnehaha Creek Watershed District. Her nominators
also cite her strong leadership in mentoring women, who
volunteer to serve on Medina’s City Council, Planning
Commission and Park Commission.

Study of Staging/Growth Plan; Pace of Development
Open Houses - Aug. 21 and Aug. 26
At the July 1, 2014 meeting the City Council directed staff to study the Staging/
Growth Plan and the pace of development within the City.
The City will hold two open houses to solicit feedback from residents, property
owners, and businesses on:
► Thursday, August 21, 2014 from 3:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.
► Tuesday, August 26, 2014 from 5:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
The open houses
will be held at the
Hamel Community
Building at 3200 Mill
Dr. The open houses
will be informal dis-
cussions, and you are
invited to stop in any-
time to provide feed-
back; brief presenta-
tions will be provided
at the top and bottom
of the hour.
Medina has experienced a great deal of single-family development activity over
the past four years (over 500 lots created and 300 constructed). However, popula-
tion/household forecasts which the City is required to follow have been reduced by
the Metropolitan Council.
The purpose of the study is to determine if changes should be made to the City’s
Staging/Growth plan which regulates when a property may be developed.
Residents, property owners, and business owners are encouraged to attend and
provide feedback. The information from the open houses will be presented for
Planning Commission review at their September 9, 2014 meeting.
If you have any questions, or cannot attend the open houses and would like to
provide feedback, please contact City Planner Dusty Finke at 763-473-8846 or
dusty.finke@ci.medina.mn.us.

City Government & Community
Flood Assistance
Many individuals and households across the county have
been hit by flooding and severe weather in recent weeks. If you
are in need of recovery resources due to the recent flood/
storms, call 211 (or 1-800-543-7709). Special focus is directed
toward those who may be underinsured and/or have functional
needs.
United Way - 211 is compiling a list of callers and sharing
this information with MNVOAD (Minnesota Voluntary Agen-
cies Active in Disasters), so that they are able to coordinate the
appropriate resources for the presented needs.
City of Medina Wins City of Excellence Award for New Public Works/Police Facility
The City of Medina was honored with a City of Excellence Award for engaging residents in the planning of cost-effective
space expansion. The city purchased a 69,000-square-foot office/warehouse and remodeled it for public works and police fa-
cilities at a cost of $7.5 million. The function-designed building will accommodate both departments for up to 40 years, and
free up space for administrative functions at City Hall. The project was a culmination of several years of research and collabo-
ration involving city officials, city residents, and members of the business community. In 2007, a facilities study concluded that
the city would be best served by a $15 million rebuild of City Hall and a new police department on its existing site, as well as
construction of a new public works facility. In 2011, two citizen focus groups reviewed the 2007 study and advocated address-
ing the most immediate needs of public works only. However, when the office/warehouse building became available, it
opened up the perfect solution. It allowed the city to act on the focus group recommendation for a new public works facility,
while also resolving its need for new space for police and administrative functions. The new facility was purchased and reno-
vated for only half the price of the original proposal. Thank you to Medina residents and business owners for your support of
this important project.

Highway 55 Commuter Bus Survey Results &
Area Transportation Options
Thank you to the 121 Medina residents who responded to the Highway 55 Commuter Bus Survey. 55% of
respondents were very likely/somewhat likely to ride the bus between Medina and downtown Minneapolis.
The complete survey results can be viewed at: http://medinamn.us/highway-55-commuter-bus-survey/.
The City of Medina met with representatives from Metro Transit and the City of Plymouth. Metro Transit
is not supportive of starting a park and ride facility in Medina at this time. It was determined by Metro
Transit that Medina is not at the point where the City can support their own park and ride location. Below
is additional information on park and ride facilities in the area with a map of bus route options on the
reverse side.
Plymouth Metrolink – Easy Come – Easy Go
Plymouth Metrolink operates express commuter and
reverse commuter service between Plymouth and downtown Minneapolis. Plymouth has convenient
stops, a passenger waiting station and park and ride locations ideal for commuters. Go to
plymouthmn.gov/Metrolink for park and ride locations, schedules, maps, fare information. Watch the
short video about how easy it is to ride the bus. Parking is free. The Olive Lane Park and Ride lot is
located at Olive Lane and County Road 6 in the Messiah Church parking lot just west of CR 101 and north
of I-394. Route 776 stops at that location and heads downtown as an express bus. Station 73 is a free
indoor parking ramp on Highway 55. Buses leave Station 73 at least every 15 minutes during rush hours.
All Plymouth Metrolink buses and facilities are ADA accessible and have bicycle racks. Because Plymouth
Metrolink is part of the larger regional transit service, Metrolink riders can also transfer to all regional
buses and trains. For more information, go to plymouthmn.gov/Metrolink or contact Plymouth Transit at
transit@plymouthmn.gov, 763-509-5535, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Riding Metrolink to and from work or school will save you time, money and a lot of headaches.
Additionally, you will be doing your part for the environment by helping to reduce auto emissions and
reducing congestion on our roadways. Consider taking a closer look at Metrolink and seeing how you can
take advantage of all that it has to offer. All the services of Plymouth Metrolink really are “Easy Come -
Easy Go.”
Metro Transit also has convenient, free park and ride locations in downtown
Wayzata and along I-394. For all regional bus information, use the Metro
Transit Trip Planner at metrotransit.org or call Metro Transit at 612-373-3333 (TTY 612-341-0140).
Transit Link is a shared-ride, curb-to-curb small bus service for the general public in the seven-county
metropolitan area, including Medina. Riders are picked up and dropped off at the curb of
scheduled pickup and destination locations. Transit Link rides must be reserved in
advance. Transit Link service is available to the public and supplements regular transit routes. Standard
service hours are weekdays from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. Fares for Transit Link trips are based upon the distance
travelled. For more information, go to metrocouncil.org, Transportation, Services, Transit Link, or call
651-602-LINK (5465). Reservation staff can help guide you through options.
Metro Mobility is a shared ride service available for riders who need additional assistance due to physical,
cognitive or psychological limitations. Individuals must apply to Metro Mobility in advance and be
certified as qualifying for ADA service. ADA-certified riders may also use Transit Link, Dial-A-
Ride and fixed route service. For more information, go to metrocouncil.org, Transportation, Metro
Mobility or call 651-602-1111 or TTY 651-221-9886 Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
