General Election Results
The official results of the 2012 General Election
were canvassed by the City of Medina City Council on
Wednesday, November 14th. Tom Crosby was re-
elected as the Mayor of Medina, serving a two-year
term. There were two seats open for City Council.
Elizabeth Weir was re-elected and John Anderson was
elected to serve a four-year term on the Medina City
Council.
Vote totals for all of the Medina candidates can be
found on the city’s website at www.ci.medina.mn.us.
The newly elected officials will be sworn in at the
January 2, 2013 City Council meeting.
Recycle Your
Holiday Lights
As you decorate for the
holiday season, you
may come across
tangled strings of
holiday lights that
no longer work.
Residents are reminded that
they can recycle those lights
throughout the year in your
current curbside recycle bin
at no additional charge.
Things to Remember as Winter Approaches
The City adopted a Snow Plowing-Ice Control Policy, which can be seen in its en-
tirety on the City Website at www.ci.medina.mn.us.
REMEMBER: City ordinance prohibits parking on any public street from Novem-
ber 1 through March 31 during the hours of 1:00 AM – 6:00 AM. If at all possible, the
City plow crew would appreciate having no vehicles parked on City streets when snow-
fall occurs during the daytime.
Please check your mailbox for sturdiness and get repaired as needed, as the City is
not responsible for mailboxes damaged by snow being pushed off the roads.
To limit damage to sod, it is advised to place a marker along curbs lines; however,
metal poles are strictly prohibited within the City right-of-way.
It is the responsibility of property owners to remove snow and ice on their own
sidewalks. However, please use ice control sparingly, because after it enters the storm
drain it will eventually end up in local lakes and rivers.
On garbage and recycling days, please place receptacles out of the way so they will
not be hit when snow is being plowed.
Shore up your fall projects before winter, so spring rains will not erode.
The City has a compost and brush pile located behind the
Public Works building off Cty Rd 24 which is open all weekends
and weekdays from 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Feel free to bring
your leaves and other plant and tree trimmings, but please make
sure they are placed on the correct pile and that any plastic bags
go back home with you.
The City also has compost and mulch available for residents
while supplies last, so feel free to help yourself.

City Business Profile:
Ditter Cooling & Heating
By: Thomas A. Ditter
Ditter Cooling and Heating is unique in that we
started in Medina in 1946 right on the family home-
stead by Holy Name Church. When Dad got out of
the Navy after World War II, he moved back home
to the farm and dove into the refrigeration business.
After high school, Jim and I both went to trade
school (HTC and Dunwoody respectively) for a
couple of years and got our diplomas for refrigera-
tion service. We became partners with Dad and
Incorporated somewhere in the mid-70s. In the
mid-80s, we moved up to Hamel and rented a com-
mercial building for 3 years. In 1987, we bought
Dad’s shares, bought the property and built the
shop that we presently operate out of today at 820
Tower Drive. Jim and I both still live in Medina on
the old homestead, which is another thing that
might make us unique.
What the company does now is called HVAC.
Heating, ventilating and air conditioning. Residen-
tial, commercial and some light industrial. Installa-
tion, service, design build, you name it we probably
can do it. We do not do much refrigeration any-
more but our backgrounds in it helps us do some
specialty work that your basic heating shop is not
qualified to do. Some examples are: clean rooms,
dry rooms, cool rooms, controlled environment
rooms and a variety of ventilation and exhaust sys-
tems for removing welding smoke to toxic chemi-
cals. We also do a lot of contracted preventative
maintenance for residential and commercial cus-
tomers.
What products do we sell? Because of our lon-
gevity and reputation, we have accounts at just
about every wholesale supply house in the area. We
have access to just about every brand of equipment
that exists. Our two, long time main brands are
Carrier (since the 1950s) and Lennox (since the
1990s). These two brands speak for themselves. If
we need to get competitive, like I said earlier, we
can get it. We prefer Carrier and Lennox because
of their quality and reputations. It fits ours.
Who are our customers? We like to think that
everyone is our potential customers. Every person
and business out there at sometime is going to need
some aspect of the services that we provide. Our
philosophy is, “If one of the best HVAC companies
in the state is right here in Medina, why would you
shop anywhere else?”
Planning Projects Under Review
The following land use projects and the following updates to the
zoning regulations are currently under review by the City. For more
information on one of the projects, or for an update on the review
schedule, please contact the Planning Department at (763) 473-4643.
Fields of Medina West Subdivision–N of Hwy 55, E of Arrowhead Dr.
Mattamy Homes has requested approval of a subdivision of 23-acres
of property (PID 02-118-23-34-0002). The proposed subdivision in-
cludes 65 single-family lots and dedication of 4 acres for a City park.
The Planning Commission reviewed the request at the November 13
meeting and recommended denial. The City Council is tentatively
scheduled to review the request at the December 4, 2012 meeting.
Variances for Home Construction – 29XX Ardmore Ave.
The property owner (PID 18-118-23-24-0154) has requested variances
from the setback requirements from the front, side and from the ordi-
nary high water level of Lake Ardmore in order to construct a home
on the parcel. The Planning Commission held a Public Hearing on
October 24 and recommended that the applicant make a number of
changes to the plans. The application is tentatively scheduled to be
reviewed by the Planning Commission again at the December 11, 2012
meeting.
Tamarack Ridge Subdivision– E of Homestead Tr., N of Deerhill Rd.
Property Resources Development Company has requested approval of
a rural subdivision of eight single-family lots on 80 acres (PIDs 21-118
-23-31-0001, 21-118-23-34-0002, and 21-118-23-34-0003). The appli-
cation is under review and may be scheduled for a Public Hearing at
the Planning Commission on either December 11 or January 8.
Lot Frontage, Flag Lot, and Driveway Regulations
The City intends to review ordinances related to lot frontage, flag lot
requirements and driveway regulations in the coming months. The
Planning Commission is tentatively scheduled to hold a Public Hearing
on the matter on December 11, 2012.
Free One-on-One Technical Assistance for Small
Business Owners and Entrepreneurs
Medina has partnered with the Metropolitan
Consortium of Community Developers (MCCD) to
offer the “Open to Business” program. This pro-
gram provides FREE one-on-one assistance from MCCD’s expert
staff, customized to meet the specific needs of each entrepreneur.
This can include creating a business plan, suggestions on financial
management and bookkeeping practices, assisting with marketing, and
referrals for financing. MCCD also administers a small business loan
fund which provides capital to expand local businesses. MCCD staff
will be available in the area every 2nd Monday of the month.
