Free One-on-One Technical As-
sistance for Small Business
Owners and Entrepreneurs
Are you thinking about starting your own
business or are you currently operating a
small business and interested in FREE
technical assistance?
Medina has part-
nered with Henne-
pin County and the
Metropolitan Con-
sortium of Community Developers (MCCD)
to offer the “Open to Business” program.
This program provides FREE one-on-one
assistance from MCCD’s expert staff,
customized to meet the specific needs of each
entrepreneur. This can include creating a
business plan, suggestions on financial
management and bookkeeping practices,
assisting with marketing, and referrals for
financing. MCCD also administers a small
business loan fund which provides capital to
expand local businesses.
For more information or to schedule a
session, please contact Rob Smolund from
MCCD at rsmolund@mccdmn.org or (612)

Planning Commission and City Council to
Create “Mixed Residential” Regulations
On August 15, 2018, the Planning Commission is scheduled hold a public
hearing on proposed regulations for the Mixed Residential land use at 7 p.m.
at City Hall.
The Mixed Residential land use applies to several properties in two locations
as shown on the following map:
1. Northwest of Brockton Lane and Medina Road
2. North of Hamel Road, east of Arrowhead Drive
The Mixed Residential land use is intended to allow a mix of housing styles
with an overall density of 3.5-4.0 units/acre. However, a portion of these
units are required to be developed at higher density of 8 units/acre or greater
to meet mandates placed on the City to provide opportunities for denser
housing, which may include apartments or townhomes.
The City Council is tentatively scheduled to review the regulations at the
September 4, 2018 meeting. An Open House was held on June 12, at which
many residents and property owners provided feedback on the potential
regulations.
For more information please visit: https://medinamn.us/citygov/
departments/planning-zoning/mixed-residential-land-use/ If you have any
questions, please contact Planning Director Dusty Finke at
dusty.finke@medinamn.gov or 763-473-8846.
City Council Reduces Fees to
Combine Substandard Lots
The City Council recently reduced the fee for
review of the combination of substandard lots
which do not meet minimum lot size or
dimension requirements. The fee to review a
combination of substandard lots is now $200.
In some situations, a home may be located on
several historical “lots” and property owners
may be receiving multiple tax statements and
paying multiple stormwater utility fees. The
reduction in fees was meant to encourage
property owners to combine these lots into a
single parcel.
For more information, contact the Planning
Department at (763) 473-4643 x1.

School Bus Safety Reminder
School will be back in session shortly; school buses will be back on the streets making streets more congested than normal. A
few reminders as we get back into school routine:
► Slow down and anticipate that the bus will be stopping frequently.
► Never pass a bus if it is stopped loading or unloading children on an undivided
highway.
► If the yellow or red lights are flashing and the stop arm is out, don’t pass. Come to a
complete stop.
► When stopping for a school bus, always stay back from the bus so the driver can
verify it is safe to load and unload the children.
► Always watch for children around the bus; they can be unpredictable and at times
make dangerous maneuvers.
► Be extra careful in school zones when school buses are present.
► Don’t block crosswalks in neighborhoods or in school zones; pedestrians have the
right-a-way.
► Always watch for school patrol officers and obey their direction.
Our kids are our greatest assets. Let’s keep them safe. If you see someone violating a school bus law, call 911, get the license
plate number and a description of the driver. Our department takes these violations serious. Let us all have a safe school year.
Hunting Permits Required for Medina
Hunting season is right around the corner. If you are planning on hunting in Medina, a discharge permit is required for all non
-residents or residents hunting on another’s property. The hunting ordinance is on our website at https://medinamn.us/
regulations-fees/licenses-permits/hunting-permits/ for your review. All hunters should review this ordinance prior to hunting
to ensure you are complying with the regulations.
In 2011, the City Council developed a no hunting map for the City of Medina. We offer
Medina residents in rural residential areas where hunting is allowed the opportunity to have
their property labeled as “No Hunting”. Any resident who would like to have their property
added to the map, please contact the Medina Police Department. This map is also on our
website for review so hunters know up front that your property has been designated as no
hunting. Requests should be sent to anne.klaers@medinamn.gov .
If you have any further questions, please feel free to call the Medina Police Department at
763-473-9209.
Check your House Numbers
Take a few minutes to make sure that your house numbers are visible from the road. In an emergency,
time can mean a matter of life or death. If your house numbers are visible from the road, police, fire,
and emergency medical personnel can save valuable time responding to an emergency. There is nothing
more frustrating for emergency responders who cannot locate the correct house due to poor address
numbers. Help us out, check and make sure your house numbers are displayed properly and easy to
locate. The life you save may be your own.
