2018 Park & Planning Commission Vacancies
The City is seeking residents to serve on the Medina Park Commission and Planning
Commission. Each commission currently has three appointments/reappointments
available, with terms expiring December 31, 2020. These commissions are volunteer
recommending bodies to the City Council. The Park Commission meets the third
Wednesday of each month at 7 p.m. in Medina City Hall. The Planning Commission
meets the second Tuesday of each month at 7 p.m. in Medina City Hall.
Interested applicants may pick up an application at City Hall or via the City’s website
at http://medinamn.us/commission-vacancies/. Deadline for applications is Fri-
day, December 15th.
City to Discuss Keeping of Chickens and
Bees and “Urban Agriculture”
Medina, like many other communities, has experienced an increased interest in the po-
tential for keeping of chickens and bees on smaller lots in the City. These types of uses
are often coined “urban agriculture,” which, according to the Minnesota legislature,
includes “producing agricultural plants, poultry, or livestock on public or private prop-
erty within the city limits.”
In Medina, chickens and bees are currently allowed in the Rural
Residential Districts. Livestock or traditional farm animals are
permitted only on properties two acres or greater and are sub-
ject to maximum density limitations. Animal structures are re-
quired to be set back a minimum of 150 feet from all property
lines.
In response to the increased interest in the keeping of
chickens and bees on smaller lots, a discussion of the
topic is planned for the December 12, 2017 Planning
Commission meeting. The discussion will address po-
tentially reducing the setback requirement for small
chicken coops and potentially allowing the keeping of
chickens and bees on smaller lots, including to addition-
al residential zoning districts.
If you have any additional questions or would like more
information, you can contact the Medina Planning De-
partment at (763) 473-4643 ext 1.

Maxxon Site Plan Review and Zoning Text Amendment – 920
Hamel Road –Maxxon has applied for a Site Plan Review for a
proposed 5,190 square foot addition to their existing facility.
The applicant has also requested that the City consider amend-
ing its exterior building material standards to allow Nichiha fiber
cement panels as a permitted building material on existing struc-
tures. The Planning Commission is tentatively scheduled to
hold a Public Hearing on the requests at the December 12 meet-
ing.
David and Katherine Crosby – Lot Combination and CUP
Amendment – 2402 Hamel Road – The applicants have request-
ed approval of a lot combination of the property at 2402 Hamel
Road and the 33 acres to the east. The applicant has also re-
quested an amendment to the recently approved Conditional
Use Permit for a 2nd dwelling on the property. The Planning
Commission held a Public Hearing on the request at the No-
vember 14 meeting and recommended approval. The City
Council is scheduled to review at the December 5 meeting.
2017 Water Tower Rehab Project Update
The Medina Public Works Department has been working with our contractor over the past few months on the Water Tower
Rehab Project. It has been a long drawn out project and will not be completed until the spring of 2018. The cold tempera-
tures in late October and all of November have forced us to delay the interior and exterior painting until warmer weather
next spring.
A lot has been accomplished and most of the remaining work will only be painting.
There have been a number of modifications done to bring the tower into compliance
with today’s standards due to regulations that have changed over the past 35 years of
use.
City Staff has had many calls about the pressure relief valves that we placed on three
hydrants in our system. These valves release a small volume of water while they are in
use; however, they prevent any pipe bursting or overpressure to the systems caused by
a malfunctioning pump or control while the water tower is out of service. We are
grateful to have such concerned citizens that do truly watch and care about the water
system.
The City will be using these pressure release valves again in the spring of 2018 for
what we hope is just a couple of weeks to finish the project. You will receive notifica-
tion either by newsletter or in your utility bill when we plan to resume the project. If
you have any questions or concerns, feel free to call Public Works Director Steve
Scherer at 763-473-8842, or email him at steve.scherer@medinamn.gov.

Canadian Pacific Holiday Train—Monday, December 11th
The Canadian Pacific Holiday Train will be making a stop in Loretto on Monday, December 11, 2017. The train will pull in
around 4:15 p.m. with a musical performance from 4:30-5:00 pm. by Terri Clark, Dallas Smith and Kelly Prescott. Festivities
in Loretto begin at 3:00 p.m. with festive music, free cookies, hot cocoa and cider (compliments of LORAM), the kiddie
train, bon fires, the RE/Max Hot Air Parade Blower and
MORE! Wear your best winter holiday hat and get your
photo taken with the characters roaming the crowd. Ru-
mor has it Olaf the snowman will be there. Most im-
portantly, bring donations for the local food shelves - cash
and nonperishable food items are most welcome.
21st Century Bank will match up to $1500 total combined
collected dollars bank wide for the area food shelves they
serve. Stop in the bank and make your contribution for the
match.
Please watch the City of Loretto website at
www.ci.loretto.mn.us for updates on attractions and shuttle
and parking information.
Keep Your Home & Property Safe While You are Away
Remember to keep your windows and doors locked, especially when you are away. If you are leaving town for the holidays
or for the winter, make sure you call the Medina Police Department at 763-473-9209 to arrange for house checks. Police will
stop by and notify you (or your keyholder) of anything suspicious or out of the ordinary.
Keep gifts and valuables out of plain view. Keep blinds and drapes or curtains closed. If a burglar can see those items, they
may attempt to enter your home. If a person you are not familiar with knocks on your door, don’t feel obligated to open the
door for them. Teach your child to do the same.
For convenience, shopping online has become a common trend; however,
it does come with many risks, among the risks include identify theft, credit
card theft, and theft once the merchandise has been delivered to your
doorstep. Make sure you are doing your online shopping only on websites
that begin with “https” – the “s” means the site is secure. Secure sites also
have a small lock icon in the lower right corner of the screen. Use a cred-
it card rather than a debit card. Credit cards offer protection from identity
theft that debit cards do not. Try to be home or have a trusted individual
available when you’re expecting a delivery. Packages stolen once delivered
is becoming very common especially during the holiday season.
If you have questions, you can call the Medina Police Department at 763-473-9209.
Stay Safe While Traveling
Everyone wants to enjoy the holidays, whether this means staying at home or traveling to visit relatives and friends. Remem-
ber to be safe. Stay tuned to weather conditions. Make sure you check for approaching storms and check for road condi-
tions prior to venturing out.

Residents on Sycamore Trail and Baker Park Road will be serviced on red weeks.
Holiday; recycling pick up is delayed by one day.
More than one-third of our trash is organic material that could be composted, so it’s easy to make a difference in reducing waste and protecting the environment by signing up for organics recycling.
Put your trash to better use
Organics recycling involves collecting food scraps, non-recyclable paper and compostable products in separate Blue Bags.
You place the Blue Bags in your trash cart, and they are later separated from the trash and sent to a compost site.
At the compost site, the organic materials are put to better use by turning them into compost, a nutrient-rich soil amendment that is used in landscaping, gardening and road construction projects.
Start participating at no additional cost
Organics recycling is already included with your trash and recycling service. You just need to sign up to get started. Sign up by contacting Randy’s at custserv@randyssanitation.com or 763-972-3335.
