As part of the MCAAC work program, several project ideas were consideredand the committee determined they would like to move forward with a pilot program to paint utility boxes.In 2018, the MCAAC researched programs implemented by other cities including Redwood City, SouthSan Francisco, and San Carlos. The Committee found that fiscally responsible and successful programsrely on community participation and donations of paint and supplies. As part of the initial planning effort,the local Leos Club surveyed all neighborhoods within the City to catalog and map utility boxes. Inaddition, Committee members reached out to art teachers at both public and private schools in Millbrae,including the high schools, to determine interest level and viability for a "call for artists" once the schoolyear started in September 2018. Teachers responded very positively and believed it to be a great programfor the students.Utility box locations and the groups assigned to paint them are outlined below. Calls for proposals havebeen done in phases.1. Taylor Middle School - box located between Starbucks at 513 Broadway and the Millbrae PostOffice. Completed in October 2019.2. St. Dunstan's - box located in the median facing Living Spaces. Completed in October 2019.3. Capuchino High School - box located at the sidewalk between ChefWang's, 1320 El Camino,and apartments at 1280 El Camino. Currently underway. Second painting day is TBD.4. Mills High School - box located at the south end of Farmer's Market parking lot. Currentlyunderway. Second painting day is TBD.Page 1 of 2

Millbrae Seniors - box located at the back of Pape's Meat, where the sidewalk and alley meet.Proposals were submitted in spring 2020 and painting will be scheduled weather-permitting.On March 9, 2020, Millbrae Cultural Arts Advisory Committee members met during their regularlyscheduled meeting and approved the submitted Millbrae Seniors design.FISCAL IMPACT:There will be a fiscal impact of $250 associated with this project, which has already been allocated in theRecreation budget.COUNCIL ACTION:Staff recommends that the City Council, by motion, approve the Millbrae Seniors design for the CulturalArts Advisory Committee Utility Box Painting Program.Page 2 of 2
