SUBJECT: PUBLIC ARTS COMMISSION ACTIONS -MEETING OF MAY 11, 2015

The City Council is requested to receive and file actions taken by the Public Arts
Commission at its meeting of May 11, 2015.
BACKGROUND:
On May 11, 2015, the Commission held its regularly scheduled meeting to review initial
design concepts for a new mural at Temple City Library; and receive an update on the
Parks Facilities Master Plan and its possible accommodation for new public artworks.
ANALYSIS:
Following is a summary of actions taken at the May 11, 2015 meeting:
1. ROLL CALL:
Present: Commissioner-Kim, Keelin, Hepler, Larsen, Rachford
Absent: Commissioner-None
Excused : Commissioner-Zhao
2. APPROVAL OF MINUTES
The Commission approved minutes oftheir April 13, 2015 meeting as amended.

3. CONTINUED BUSINESS
A. INITIAL MURAL DESIGN CONCEPTS
Muralist Art Mortimer presented his initial design concepts (or sketches) for a
new mural at Temple City Library. The Commission unanimously approved
Sketch No. 2 for further refinement to include the following: caption text for
its two portraits, incorporation of the South Santa Anita school building (now
Longden Elementary) to the background streetscape, adjusting trees (i.e.,
lowering height or removing trees) in the sketch to allow for better view of the
school, and other characteristics to make the background interesting (e.g.,
birds or flags, etc.).
4. PRESENTATION
A. PARKS FACILITIES MASTER PLAN
Parks and Recreation Director Burroughs presented an update on the Parks
Facilities Master Plan underway. Of particular note, Burroughs stated that
discussions for new public artworks in city parks would be appropriate upon
approval of the Master Plan, which is scheduled for Council consideration
later this summer.
CONCLUSION:
The City Council is requested to receive and file this report.
