PERKINS SCHOOL

Thank you Mr. President and to the members of the Honorable Town Council, I want to provide an
update regarding the matter with Perkins school.
• Mr. Smith, the Chairman of the Board of Assessors, and the Town's special counsel met
with Mr. Power and Perkins's legal counsel on Tuesday, January 21, 2020.
• On Friday, January 24, 2020, Mr. Power wrote by email to Mr. Smith and informed him that
Perkins was not interested in responding to the Town's PILOT proposal. Mr. Power
forwarded a copy of his email to all councilors.
• Mr. Smith responded by email to Mr. Power this afternoon , indicating that [t]he Town
continues to believe that further discussions between the parties are absolutely necessary to
better understand each side's respective views concerning the municipal services the Town
provides to Perkins, fairness to taxpayers and other exempt organizations and the benefits
that Perkins provides to Watertown." Mr. Smith requested additional information from
Perkins and reiterated that the Town remains willing to participate in a full and open
discussion with Perkins regarding the "appropriateness of a PILOT." A copy of Mr. Smith's
email was forwarded to councilors this afternoon.
