Strategy
v Community- guided effort
v Based on sound coastal science and
public values and interests
v Establishes the context for future
discussions and the development of
an implementation plan- the Brewster
Coastal Resource Management Plan
Why is Brewster Developing a Coastal
Adaptation Strategy?
v Need to plan for the future in a comprehensive
way
v Experiencing on-going erosion, sea level rise
and a changing climate
v Recognize importance of engaging citizens
earlier in the planning and development of
actions to adapt to changing coastal conditions
How is the Coastal Strategy Being
Developed?
v Brewster Coastal Advisory Group (BCAG), with
individuals representing important interests
and concerns in Brewster
v Consulting team of Consensus Building
Institute, facilitating the process and Horsley-
Witten Group, providing scientific, technical
and planning support
v Grant from the MA Office of Coastal Zone
Management and Town funds
Timeline and Next Steps
The BCAG will:
v Review tonight’s discussion and conduct further
analysis of public access issues in relation to
predicted coastal change scenarios,
v Develop a preliminary set of management
strategies for discussion and analysis,
v Present the preliminary strategies for public
discussion this summer, and
v Draft and submit a final Brewster Coastal
Adaptation Strategy to the Board of Selectmen in
September 2016.
Objectives of this Visioning Workshop
v Introduce the BCAG, their charge, and goal to
create the Brewster Coastal Adaptation Strategy
v Engage the public in discussion about Brewster’s
changing coastline and development of the
coastal adaptation strategy to prepare for those
changes
v Share your concerns, hopes, and priorities for
the future of Brewster’s coastal areas
