HomeMy Public PortalAboutBiking_BrewsterBiking Brewster A strategy to enhance biking in Brewster * Concern about reducing carbon emissions * Importance of healthy lifestyles * Contribution to local economy * Chamber of Commerce Sustainability Strategy * Cape Cod Rail Trail popularity * Brewster Open Space Plan * CC Commission Regional Transport Plan and 6A Corridor Study The opportunity for biking Purpose To provide a framework for future decisions regarding improvements to the road network and public facilities in ways that promote the safe use of bikes for recreation and as an alternative means of transport in Brewster Biking Brewster Strategy * Expand recreational biking opportunities * Increase bike access to key destinations in Brewster * Establish links to regional bike routes * Enhance bike safety * Build public awareness of biking opportunities and safety Strategy Goals Loop 1: Rt 137 – Freeman’s Way ball fields- Nickerson SP- CCRT/Millstone Rd Near term: Negotiations with DCR on NSP connector, signage, bikelanes along Millstone Long-term: Bike lanes along RT 137 and Freemans Way Loop 2:Lower Road and Beach Landings Near-term: signage Goal 1:Expand recreational biking opportunities Loop 3: Punkhorn Parklands (primarily mountain biking) Near-term: Build public awareness Establish bicycle sharing program Long-term: work with local businesses and/or CC Commission Goal 1:Expand recreational biking opportunities (con’t) Key destinations include pond and Bay landings, government services, shopping, and employment Near-term: Prepare biking map, install bike racks, improve safety marking at key intersections, increase toilet facilities Long-term: Construct bike lanes, discuss with DCR and DOT tunnel under 6A for access to bayside beaches Goal 2: Increase biking access to key destinations in Brewster Regional routes: “6B” from Dennis on Satucket Rd, link to Harwich network Long term: improve signage indicting routes Goal 3: Improve links to regional routes Near term: * Bike lanes and shared use paths with 6A repaving * Discourage vertical curbs * Improve safety marking at key intersections * Incentives for helmets * Promote safety info at Information Center, resorts, B&Bs * Safety program with rental shops * Safety program in schools Goal 4: Enhance bike safety Long-term * Construct bike lanes and shared use paths on secondary roads * Improve sidewalks and dirt roads where there is bike travel Goal 4: Enhance bike safety (con’t) Near term * Prepare a Biking Brewster guide, including map, for broad distribution * Info to public as they purchase beach stickers * Organize bike tours to show routes * Coordinate outreach with RTA * Brand Brewster as a bike friendly town in coordination with Chamber of Commerce Goal 5: Expand public outreach Biking Brewster Strategy Map Thank you!
