HomeMy Public PortalAboutHHC 09 23 1992MINUTES OF THE REGULAR MEETING NORTH OCEAN BOULEVARD LANDSCAPING ADVISORY COMMITTEE TOWN OF GULF STREAM SEPTEMBER 23, 1992, 12:1OPM TOWN HALL OF GULF STREAM 100 SEA ROAD, GULF STREAM, FLORIDA ************************************************************* I. The meeting was called to order by the Chairman, Jeanne Breazeale, at 12:10PM. In attendance were Jeanne Breazeale, Mary Windle, Kim Tiernan, and Eleanor Woolems. II. Mary moved to accept the minutes of the meeting of August 5, 1992. Kim seconded the motion. The motion carried. III. Discussion ensued regarding the effects of Hurricane Andrew on the homes and property in the Miami area, as well as in the Bahamas. There seemed to be some contradictions in reports regarding the stamina of the Australian Pine Tree in its ability to withstand hurricane -force winds. The Bahamas reported that the Australian Pine survived better than most of their native vegetation, ie., the branches snapped as did the tops of some of the very tall trees; but, for the most part, the trees remained rooted. Miami reported extensive damage to all property, including the pines. It seemed that the broken limbs from the pines are difficult to remove, due to their weight and density. Jeanne commented that it is next to impossible to find a hurricane resistant tree -- therefore, why spend thousands of dollars to line North Ocean Boulevard with very expensive trees (which we don't want anyway) as opposed to the much less expensive Australian Pine, when, in the event of another hurricane of Andrew's magnitude, very little -- if anything -- will be left standing anyway? The Committee thought that her point was well made. IV. The next meeting of NOBLAC is set for October 15, 1992, at 9:OOAM. V. Jeanne adjourned the meeting.
