SUMMARY STATEMENT:
In FY09, the City of McCall received funding from the Safe Routes to School (SR2S) program through ITD
to construct a multiuse pathway on school district property at Payette Lakes Middle School. As part of that
project, City staff coordinated a Safe Routes to School team which focuses on encouragement, education,
and enforcement activities to increase the number of students walking or biking to school. Representatives
from the McCall Police Department, Recreation Department, Community Development Department,
McCall Memorial Hospital, McCall Donnelly PTA, and school administrators will participate in the
planning.
The SR2S team recommends that additional funding be sought for education and encouragement activities.
This could include incentives, prizes for the annual Bike Rodeo, educational books, pamphlets, and bike
safety equipment such as helmets, etc. that could be distributed to students to increase walking and biking
activities. ITD provides a comprehensive list of resources and suggestions for activities. The McCall
Recreation Coordinator and Lyle Nelson of McCall Memorial Hospital are collaborating on potential
encouragement and education activities as well. It is anticipated that as more focus is placed on
encouragement and education that more students will participate.
RECOMMENDED ACTION:
Approve submission of the Safe Routes to School "mini -grant" funding application to the Idaho
Transportation Department and authorize the Mayor to sign all necessary documents.
