SUBJECT: UPDATE ON POTENTIAL NEW CHILDREN'S LIBRARY
RECOMMENDAT ION:
Receive and file report by Cou ncilm embe r Sternquist on the potentia l for a new Los
Angeles County Chi ldren's Library in Temple City .
BACKGROUND:
1. In March , 2013 , Mayor Sternquist was appoi nted as delegate to the City Council
Temple City Library Committee.
2. In 2013, Mayor Sternquist was appointed by the Los Angeles County City Selection
Committee to serve on the County's Library Commission representing the Fifth
District. In this capacity she represents the regio n (including Temple City) providi ng
input and po li cy advice to the Los Angeles County Librarian and Board of
Supervisors co ncerning the Los Angel es County Library system.
3. In 2013 , the City conducted a Library Needs Assessment.
ANALYSIS:
Several upgrades to the current libra ry have taken place for the last few years , but the
ove rall space of t he current library is outstripping its cu rren t needs and demands.
Councilmember Sternquist has m et with Supervisor Antonovi ch 's Deputy and County
Library officia ls abo ut improvements/expansion of the current library. Councilmember
Sternquist will report on th e preliminary dis cussions that have taken place concerning any
improvement and the potenti a l for a new children 's library.
