This funding is for a variety of law enforcement activities, including technology improvements that will allow a law enforcement agency to improve its crime fighting capabilities. The McCall Police Department currently has grant funding from the Edward Byrne Memorial JAG program which was a direct allocation from the US Dept. of Justice through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act earlier this year. That funding is for the purchase of a LaserFische and automated evidence management system for the MPD. The proposed project for the JAG funding is the purchase of a new server that will store the digital evidence that has been compiled by the MPD. The current server is at capacity. The attached spreadsheet estimates the expected cost for a robust server infrastructure, storage, operating system and database engine for a digital evidence management system. It is intended to greatly increase the MPD's capacity to reliably store and retrieve large volumes of digital evidence with a working life of approximately 5 years until any major upgrade is required. It is intended to replace the current infrastructure, which is running out of capacity as more forms and accumulating quantities of digital evidence have been introduced. The hardware and system software are compatible with existing infrastructure, and can be easily integrated and managed with currently available resources. This includes the evidence management system that will be purchased with the ARRA Byrne funding. RECOMMENDED ACTION: Approve the submission of the Edward Byrne Memorial Grant application for technology improvements and authorize the Mayor to sign all necessary documents.
